I want to say the seedling i have is suppose to be Cresthaven and i hope that is true. I guess i’ll find out in a few years. That is highly rated peach.
picked my reliance today, wasps were going after them quite a bit. the redder ones are about 20 brix…
Any special treatment to grow them in your area? Do they winter kill at all? Im currently growing Somerset but would like to add another variety.
I started eating my trailman crabapples this week. I think they are awesome, very glad I planted one. My wife claimed it was the best apple she ever had, we have been on a diet of store bought for many months so it sure seems like that at this point anyway. Something stole all my zestar apples from the tree so this will be my only early apple I get to enjoy for the next couple of weeks. Can’t wait until this tree can support hundreds.
send me a stick!
We’ve been eating them this week too. They are definitely tasty little devils. I still prefer Chestnut crab, but Trailman is sure a nice treat when not much else is ripe.
I can do that just have to remind me.
Unfortunately, it looks like my chestnut dropped them early on. Still looks like I’m going to be sampling some wickson though. Also get to try for the first time asain pears and a couple golden russet.
I had my first golden russet last year, I liked it! This year we had a late frost and I barely have any apples unfortunately
put in Wickson, zestar, Williams pride, trailman, chestnut crab and Clarks crab last spring. the bigger established trees from fedco tried to fruit but i pinched them. one of my seedling grafted Clarks crab sent out 2 blooms at only 6in. tall from rootstock i grafted then planted out in the orchard the same spring. next summer should be interesting if i can keep the moose/ voles out.
I only have a handful of Trailman left at this point and I’m starting in on my Chestnut Crab. I finished up my Black Ice plum last week and I’m excited for my toka and superior plums to start. My somerset grapes are getting to be very tasty as well. Overall its been a good year of trying new things. Hopefully next year is a year of even more new varieties.
The new varieties that I’m still waiting to try this year are Honey Gold, Ashmeads Kernel and Starkey.
Bought some Colorado peaches from Hyvee. Box they were in said Glohaven but other boxes had other names and not sure if they mix that stuff. Peaches were excellent for store bought. Going to grow out a few of these seeds and bud them to a mature yard tree. Also grabbed a few Michigan peaches from Woodmans that box said were Bellaire which is a sport of Loring. Also good peaches. I’ll grow out a seed or 2 of those too.
got lots of Marquette grapes hanging. will be my 1st crop ever. hopefully they have time to fully ripen here.
I planted 4 marquette last year and this year they filled the trellis out so i should be looking at quite a bit next year, probably over did it dont really drink too much wine. More looking forward to some hard cider. Let us know how it turns out if you make any. Is there anything else they can be used for?
4 vines shouldn’t give you too much. Mine are in year 2 and a little ahead of schedule. I really thinned the clusters so they didn’t stunt. I’m guessing you’d be lucky to get a 3 gallon carboy filled with 4 vines? I put in 7 vines each of red and white and would be happy to get a 5 gallon carboy of each when the vines are older. I’m thinking that might be a bit optimistic. We certainly don’t drink enough to use it all, but by the time you give it away and stash some away to see how it tastes in 5 years….you won’t have extra.
juice and preserves.
Chambourcin seems closer to ripen.
Superior plum is getting there. But most were picked by animals at night. These are the last two I found, not ripen yet, but flavor has developed.
Flavor Queens also in the same situation as the Superior.
Pretty sure i saw an opossum eating what remains of my grapes. Anyone have an issue with them? I sprayed whatever it was (it was dark out there) with the garden hose on full power.
