Upper Midwest Growers

I was working in the woods on a new foodplot and stopped to snap a couple pics of a wild tree. It’s just loaded. Seems most of the wild apples and crabs have great crops this year. The fruit on this tree get to just over 2" without thinning. They ripen in September, are sweet/tart, and get a hint of red flesh just under the skin. My wife and I agree that they taste like good sweet cider.

I’ve noticed my fruit trees have all put on summer growth (apricots/plums/etc) the last few weeks. New shoots/leaves. I have one that hasn’t. The leaves on this peach are green, but it has had some leaves turn red and fall off. It put out some growth in the spring but just doesn’t seem right. I pruned it back hard very early in spring when one section looked dead. I’m starting to think the tree is a goner///just taking its time dying. It has no fruit. Any thoughts?

My peach trees have done this during the years it has not produced any fruit, such as this year. Not sure the reason. Like you said it makes the trees look like a goner. I though this about my peach trees two years ago-2023. Last year I had what I consider a bumper crop of peaches on my trees, They were absolutely loaded with peaches. This year , zero peaches. Plus I am getting some yellowing and some red and falling off, not completely dropping all their leaves, just some. Enough to notice. The trees look like they are dying out. They just may be. We will see what they look like next year.

I looked at the leaves again today and you can almost tell they aren’t a vibrant green anymore//almost turning yellow. I’ve lost a lot of peach trees over the year, but they usually do it right away in the spring.

It’s a tree i can stand to lose. I might just chainsaw it and figure out another species to plant in that spot.

Speaking of i need to prune my oaks back. They don’t want you doing it until Aug or later.

I’ve noticed that a year with a very heavy crop can be the tree taking its last shot before the coming end.

Yep, I agree. The tree is trying to produce seeds/pits to be taken away by animals and or just anywhere close to the tree. Trying to keep their variety going.

This is a flowering peach so no fruit. It did have some flowers this year but a very weak looking bloom. I have one pluot grafted to it lower on the tree and that graft seems to be doing ok and even has some new growth so i have no idea.

Here is another peach nearby (i want to say these are raspberry red seedlings) that has lots of new growth.

My white peach that i had a huge crop on last summer died this spring. I removed it right away. I knew it was a goner. Peaches around here seem like annuals. You might get a few crops out of a tree but have a replacement ready.

This is a melon from seed that must have been from a last year store bought fruit. I just let it grow. I have zero idea what it’ll be but right now appears to be some sort of honeydew melon? or not.

Looks more like a cantaloupe type with that netting.

I wonder if it could be a galia. I usually buy those if i buy melons. I guess i’ll find out.

My 1st mammoth sunflower is blooming. Must be around 10 feet in height or so.

Well I waited 7 or 8 years for my honeycrisp to produce and it finally did, but in July… went on fedcos site and williams pride seems to match. Its OK to eat nothing special just decent. Never wanted a summer apple though i have plums, tomatoes, cucumbers and so on to eat and preserve. Decided to press for juice since i had so many. Had over 3 gallons of juice, and when trying to get the last bit out the press slipped and dumped it all out of the bucket. That hurts, i know to not skip on securing the press next time.

Off to the food pantry again with buckets of apricots.

I had WP at one time but the birds pecked them so bad that i got rid of them. For a summer apple it was good.

I think my melons are Galia–turning more yellow now.

I got the third and final dose of citric acid/Imidan/Captan/Indar/Nufilm 17 done this morning. If the deer, bear, coons, and birds don’t get them all I may get a decent crop this year.

I ate my first melon. It was white around the seed pocket and green towards the skin. Sweet in the white flesh, but green not so much. Not as melting as i like a melon (more crunch). I’ll let the next one sit a lot longer before picking. There are about 5 of them so now i know.

Was it at slip?

No. The tendril was still green and i cut it.

I have cannas blooming and i noticed the hummingbird was feeding on them. Wasn’t sure the blooms served a purpose.

In Madison, wi yesterday at Olbrich and noticed their paw paws are loaded with fruit. Still amazes me how well they do in that area. It can’t be any warmer than here. Maybe it has a little microclimate because it’s near L Monona. Go there if you are ever in the area. The outside is free to roam and they have a huge selection of plants.
