Hi I’m in Omaha (outskirts) and I’m growing some cool things looking to expand and if anyone in the areas sells/grows rare stuff lemme know I’m always looking for something new and rare to try:
I grow:
Pink lemonade blueberries, a few other blueberry cultivars, raspberry, yellow raspberry, Fuji apple, gala apple, Asian pear, pawpaw, serviceberry, elderberry, plum, peaches, cherries, and blackberries.
Biggest problems have been Japanese beetles those lil whipper snappers. Other than that the trees are acclimating. Most are planted just this spring however there are a ones at fruiting age. So far this year we have gotten peaches, pink lemonade blueberry, and some blackberries however there are some pears and raspberries on the bush.
Any new and rare things you’re looking for specifically? I’m a couple hours north of Omaha, but get that way every month or two to take my kid to the zoo. Depending on the season, I have a variety of turmeric rhizomes, vaeiegated dragon fruit plants, a variety of rare/somewhat rare apple scion, and a variety of potato starts.
I’m not really looking for new things to plant. (Because I overdid it a little bit and now have a lot of work to do always) but more new things to try. Cool things your growing btw! Love that zoo, that aquarium is the best
First official u pick event this morning from 7am to 11am for black currants. Had quite a few people show up… way better than expected. Sold for $5 / lb and no one complained about that.
I grafted this tree a number of years ago and lost the tag. It was a year I grafted Trail, Trailman, and Shafer crabs from GRIN. 2 years ago I was thinking it was Trailman, it didn’t bear fruit last year but it did get a number of fireblight(blossom blight?) strikes. No strikes this year and a decent crop. A doe is doing her best to eat every fruit under 7’ or so however.
The fruit currently has light brown seeds, yellow flesh, is quite sweet, juicy, and not a lot of tannins. In another week or so they should be really good. I’m leaning towards it being either Trail or Shafer now.
nice! im hoping someday Maine wakes up and throws out the Ribes ban. its so stupid as you can go in the woods anywhere and find wild ones growing. even N.Y got rid of theirs. they can easily grow on less than marginal land. id grow them and hazels to sell.

I mentioned earlier i planted sunflowers around the 4th of July. Well just a month later and the biggest one is 44 inches tall. One of them is starting to form a flower head. I could stagger plant these pretty much thru July and have sunflowers well into the fall i think.

I expect the drought and hot weather to continue into fall. We entered a significant El Niño back in May 2026; at the time I experienced hurricane-force winds out west.
Altai Mtn crab today. The fruit is ripe now and will go to over ripe and mealy quickly. It is sweet, not real juicy, and the crabby tannins are largely gone. Brix tested at 15
Did a 6th and last of the year cover spray this morning. Not much of a crop this year compared to last year. Multiple frosts the week before Memorial Day and drought worked against me. There’s always next year(until there isn’t anyway)
We were up at my brother’s land an hour north of here where he has about a dozen mostly apple trees. We cleared them (they all have fencing around them because of deer) of weeds and i tried a few apples (the trees were put in 5+ years ago) but nothing was ripe. I want to say he has sweet 16, liberty, and maybe some others. The one tree we cleared of weeds had a huge beehive either in it or next to it because they swarmed us. We just left the fence off on that one.
I took some apple budwood and grafted a few buds onto my seedling trees. We’ll see what takes. I’ve also done some peach chip budding. From my experience peaches are the easiest to chip bud. The wood is easy to work with and most of them take. I’m tempted to bud some apricot onto the peach===
If i was going to grow only 1 raspberry i would grow one of these gold types. This thing has bloomed all spring and summer and puts out huge berries. Flavor is excellent. Doesn’t have killer thorns like the black caps. They almost seem everbearing. This vine has been in the same spot for years and just keeps coming back–it is even shaded part of the day.
so far all ive done is word of mouth and by posting on facebook groups and I did pay facebook to advertise for 3 days before my event, setting a $5 limit / day. its hard to know how effective that is, but its fairly cheap to do, I think I got around 500 impressions or whatever for that amount if I remember correctly. I suppose thats just where you are scrolling and it inserts that into peoples feed. Not sure how good it is at targeting people who would actually be interested based upon what FB knows about their interests / hobbies tho.
First picking of apples, these are Norland. Seems like when you pick them when they’re ripe they’re already too far gone, but they’re great at this stage for dehydrating.
