I bought a home and the previous owners said this was a cherry tree, but based on other things they said, I’d like help confirming this is prunus serrulata.
Is this likely prunus serrulata? I have yet to see it flower or fruit since I have not owned it for too long.
If this is indeed prunus serrulata, is it compatible with prunus avium, prunus cerasus, or prunus fruiticosa? Has anyone had experience with such grafts? Rootstock Graft Compatibility did not seem to have much information on compatibility
The bark does look like cherry to me. Honestly, that is one of the nicer structured weeping cherries I’ve seen. It almost seems a shame to butcher it. If it were me, I’d keep it as is (maybe just thin the branches a bit to accentuate its form) and use the abundant space around it to add fruiting trees to the yard.
That’s mostly the plan- the back row along the fence will be for fruit trees and my hope was to just add a branch or two of fruiting cherries. I cut down a bunch of old pine and poplar to make way for the pawpaw, fig, jujubes, and persimmons that are coming
Maybe it’s best I try to find space for a cherry…
Because of the upright growth habit of regular cherries, they would really look out of place on a weeping tree. I’m all for growing food in the landscape, but preserving elements of beauty can be really important too. Sometimes it’s not enough to simply feed our stomachs; we need to also feed our souls.
