I have seen some postings off and on about this apple in some older threads. I was wondering if anyone is still growing this apple. If so how do you like it and how does it taste and store? I was thinking of possibly adding this one to my orchard. the little information I see really does not go into depth of explaining the long term results and details of this apple.
Thank you for your input.
@39thparallel grows ‘Seek no further’. I saw it and tasted it, just I can’t remember it in particular(or if I tasted it green or overripe).
Scottfsmith grows it. He seems to like it. I know it and northern spy have a reputation of taking nearly a decade to fruit on standard rootstock. Not sure how much quicker a limb graft would fruit for you. From all accounts it’s a solid old apple. Mine on m111 actually had a few blooms this year on a 4 year old tree. It’s also a large growing tree with great branch angles and stout thick branches.
I’m still waiting on my tree from Stark Bros on unknown semi dwarf rootstock to have its first blossoms. It was planted in 2019 IIRC
Edit…it was planted in 2017.
I planted a tree of WSF this fall I got from Century Farm Orchard, so it does well enough to be offered for sale by that nursery. I choose it for use as an apple noted for increasing in flavor as a dried apple. I dry every apple I come across and some do increase in flavor intensity quite a bit. Unfortunately, I get lazy sometimes and don’t write on the bags what variety I dried and it does vary on the ripeness of the apple being dried. This year Black Twigs are outstanding as a dried one. Got a bunch of other apples in storage that will end up dried or as applesauce after Christmas.
I will add that of the 11 trees I bought from them that were grafted this year onto MM111, the WSNF was the only one that had started to branch. But it sounds like it will be many years before it fruits for me.
The flavor was very good this year. It’s the first time the variety lived up to it’s name
And how was disease susceptibility if you can recall?
I have 4 trees on B.118 budded in 2018 or '19. They started to bloom in 2023 but have not set fruit yet. They don’t demonstrate weakness to any specific disease (with my spray program), but mine were set back by excessive deer browsing. They’ve recovered nicely and may fruit in 2025. I believe mine are a red sport simply called Red Westfield Seek No Further.
