My son would like to grow a tree in his room. He wants it to be a bonsai fruit or nut tree or a small indoor potted tree that he can eat fruits/nuts from.
Any ideas on what he can grow?
He doesn’t want any berries/lemon.
Thank you!

Does it have to be indoors? Fruit trees need sunlight to produce fruit.
Kumquats grafted on Flying Dragon.
Now I know what I will do with my pepper plants this fall.
Thank you so much!!!
I will check the Kumquats and Peppers options with him. I think he might like the idea of peppers!
He is also very interested in growing cotton (No idea why, may be it looks cool ) - that’s his alternate option if indoor fruit trees are hard. I have never grown cotton - outdoors or indoors, is it possible to grow indoors?
He is very keen to grow it indoors in his room.
Sunlight - That’s exactly why I am not very interested in growing anything indoors + Bonsai seems like a lot of work. I received a bonsai with pink flowers as a birthday gift and it died in just a week
He does have a good quality grow light he got for a school project and there are some nice spots in the house with sunlight from windows/skylights for a few hours - will that work?
Bonchi or Bonsai pepper plants are excellent indoor plants that can still produce meaningful amounts of pods with a small plant. I have about a dozen bonchi plants that I’ve been growing for a year now. Habaneros make the best plants for this as the genetics are suited to producing short bushy plants. Other Chinense, Baccatum, and Annuums like to grow quite tall which isn’t conducive to making a bonchi plant.
This is my Caribbean Red Habanero that I brought inside from last season. It’s on the third round of pods since I brought it indoors. I literally hacked this plant down to the largest branches with no leaves or anything else on it and it still survived. Peppers are great plants from which to learn pruning, plant care, nutrients and more. They’re survivors and will tolerate extreme pruning/mistakes, lapses in care and grow quickly!
Thanks all!
Convinced him to do a potted kumquat tree outside his bedroom window. That makes it a lot less work for me
I used to grow carnivorous plants when I was in high school. If they get direct sun for a few hours they do ok. In Australia a north facing window is best. Many of the sundews are very simple to grow for a beginner.
