What's happening today 2016?

Drew,
I have one Razz blueberry bush. It has a generous amount of fruit forming. It will be the first crop, so I am curious to see if it really tastes different from the others. It looks like a keeper.

For some reason,Razz doesn’t grow very well for me.The plant won’t develop fully like other Blueberry’s do.There are definite Raspberry overtones in the fruit though. Brady

I lost Southmoon this year, and I think I’m going to stay away from it. Looking for something to replace it with. Contenders are Raz, Sweetheat, and Spartan. It will be in a pot or I might consider large producers like Bluecrop. I need an early producer, so probably will pick Spartan.

I follow this receipt

Vodka is clear and doesn’t have aromatics.

You can tell when oak has iron in it because it bleeds down the tree blue. If the guys see blue at the ends of the logs they won’t mill them usually. He always told me it’s a buck a tooth if he hits metal. My trailer took a beating but survived. It was way over loaded. I didn’t know I was putting that much on it when I had the brainstorm of getting it after work. The guy at the mill said he could mill anything I could bring him size wise as long as it wasn’t from the side of the road. He says big oaks usually get nails in them by the road. I told him it was big but he underestimated me! This log was so big the builder said the front end loader couldn’t grab it with the bucket. He just kept pushing it around till it ended up in the middle of a culdesac.

Here is how you handle those big logs to get them down to a smaller size

We had a a Tstorm roll through around 5:00. Oh, yeah! Lots of loud, booming thunder and some heavy downpours. Heavy downpours might not be the best type of rain, but this should have been well charged to bring some nitrogen into the soil. It cooled the temperatures for a while. Of course, now it’s muggy.

I’m saved from watering anything besides container plants tomorrow! I can get back to the pulling weeds.

We are supposed to get some tomorrow with heavy rain. Will save me from watering also if it happens. Been nice so far this year with the timing if the rain.

Anyone who splits a lot of wood knows white oak is one of the hardest wood to split. It actually rips apart. Red oak splits nice. It’s pretty nice how that powder splits big stuff like that. I should have done that to the one I took up to the mill. I wonder how well tannerite would work. They blow some big things up with it on youtube.

My first year plants struggle during our hot dry summers and yes I am happy just to have them survive. Year number two I still water some but not nearly as much.

It’s better for hangovers too… I won’t touch wine anymore and stay away from the dark rums…ugh…beer is also off my drinking list if i can help it (hard to do in WI)>

3.5 inches of rain so far this month and its pouring again. Everything is looking yellow. Too much moisture. My thought on a possible drought this year was very off.

I am not sure of the fig cultivar. I found the tree in an overgrown thicket at the site of an abandoned home orchard. Perhaps it is a Mission fig. Flavor was rather subdued compared to the super sweetness of other figs I have gotten off this tree. Perhaps this one was picked a week too early. I usually wait until they begin to soften and droop a bit more.

does anyone know what kind of apricot this one is? friend of mine in Beijing just harvested these ,they call it white apricot。It makes me drooling just looking at these。I am wondering if I can find same or similar one here?

We have a really dry season up to now, total rain is less than .5 inches from April. My lawn is yellow and need to water the garden almost daily.

Two different types of apricots and a plum type would be a guess. They where still fun to pick and eat

There are several white apricots available in the US, the closest looking one to that is one called Seip’s White which is probably related to Spark’s Mammoth. Arboreum sells several varieties of white apricot.

I have been trying many white apricots over the years, they tend to take much longer to set fruit and even then they can be stingy. Seip’s is a very light setter. The varieties in China today are probably much more productive, too bad they are not available here.

Last night I unfortunately saw the first signs of Japanese beetles this year. Last year they tore up a lot of leaves. Did not have much luck with Sevin but killed by flicking them into soapy water but that required constant attention and they still tore up a ton of leaves. Not sure if there is a better way to treat them this year. But last year they were my most common pest. I have very little fruit though so it’s mostly cosmetic.

If enough people here are interested,I can file paper work with US custom and import some cuttings
