What's happening today?

Red wigglers love horse manure. I like to dump copious amount of horse manure in my worm bin along with kitchen scraps and junk mail.

It rained one day here and you can’t tell at all, very dry!

@tomIL nice score on the compost!

Wow, that is fantastic!

I took a walk in the local park at lunch and came across these. Is it walnut? Or poisonous stuff?

From this tree:

Yes those are black Walnuts. They are good to eat.

Handle with care unless you want stained hands. To me black walnut taste is superior to English walnut but they are a pain to get at the good part.

This is my last day here in Surfside Beach, near Myrtle Beach SC.I was able to do some outdoor activities, earlier in the week, before Hurricane Joachin sent a bunch of rain. Brady

Black walnut- we used to lay them in the dirt driveway and let Dad drive over them for a couple of weeks with the car; then we’d gather up the nut part and sell a whole big bag of them, in the shell, for very little money. Something of a disappointment for a 10 year old!

They have much more flavor than an English walnut but I find it somewhat overbearing. A real delicacy to some, though. Good in fudge, pralines, brownies, salads, or as a garnish. If you want to pick a tough nut I think hickory is much worthier of your time, but stingier. : -(

One of my very favorite nuts. Growing up in Ohio they were on our land. Black walnut cake with cream cheese frosting. Oh Yum. Will make it in Nov. this year.

I love braums black walnut ice cream, but not enough to pick them up ,hull them, and crack and pick the meat out. I have a black walnut tree in my yard that is so big I can’t reach half way around it. Maybe I will this year. So far I have found one use for them. I take a dry walnut and sand a smooth area around the center with a drimmel. Then I carve a name on it. I give them to my mom, she has a little stand that looks like a tree with a name on it for everyone in the family, a bunch of nuts!

Mrsg, You just flung a bad craving on me. My fave is black walnut apple cake w/caramel sauce. Now I gotta pickup some walnuts :yum:

Oh man, sounds so good!!! I might have to make that too. I buy my black walnuts, cracked, and ready to use. They are the best. Haven’t found a black walnut tree in my part of RI yet.

Mrs. G, they grow wild in Arkansas and a few planted ones make it up here in Montana, so I suspect it might be doable in RI!

Thanks Mark, don’t think I want a tree, as they become huge, as I recall, and are best found in forest. Love black walnuts though.

I picked some hickory nuts the other day and I don’t think I want that. It’s not that tough to crack but so little tiny piece of meat inside. I think the efforts to gather and process took much more time than the yields.

It’s fun to forage but with so small yield, I rather refocus onto other prospects.

I could forage hundreds of black walnuts, I just do not want to deal with them myself. Too hard to process with that green flesh that is just terrible. Running them over is a good idea! With my luck I’ll mess the tire up!

Don’t get any of the oil in your eyes either. I cleaned two five gallon buckets of walnuts about three years ago and on the last one a piece of the husk flung in my eye and I had to go to emergency after running water on my eye for 15 minutes. They couldn’t figure out what to do till one of the nurses tried some of her milk from her lunch and that relieved it. Just like pepper spray!

Thanks for the tip. There’s strong oil fragrant emits from those fleshy nuts, just like the hickory.

Come down here, they are weeds. My drive to work consists on walnut covered roads.

squirrels prefer black walnut to any other fruits.
