What's happening today?

Beautiful day in Indiana today! My wife has a couple of buckets full of black walnut in the garage. She has never cracked any walnuts before. Leaves are starting to fall.

Tell her to put on protective gloves or she will get smoker’s fingers like mine! I put on my usual garden gloves when I cleaned about 40 tennis ball size of the fruits not realized that the juice soaked through. After everything was said and done, I got about 13 left sunk to the bottom of the bucket! :smirk:

Now I realized (and appreciated) why market nuts are so expensive! It’s more than just “the walk in the park”…

I buy them by the pound, shelled and ready to go from nuts.com. A far easier way to go!

Yes. Agree. Wear thick plastic cleaning gloves or your hands will turn purplish-brown!

Heat wave here in southwest WI… van was showing 82F…avg now is 60ish for a high. Leaves around here are really changing fast. Tomorrow hurricane winds —gusts to 40mph— much cooler the rest of the week (normalish)… First freeze possible next weekend.

Record high in Omaha today 91F and cooling down in the 60s this coming Sunday. Enjoying this Indian summer!!

Heads up but the heat sticks around …especially for you. Long range models cook most of the west half of the country right through late October.

Yeah, love global warming in the fall and winter!

Tony, I have never been to your part of the world but was watching the Nebraska, Wisconsin football game yesterday and thought it was odd to see the fans in tee shirts for this time of year

I know you didn’t ask for any peeling walnut advice but here I go anyway. Most of the mess can be avoided by letting the walnut/hull completely dry and then spread on a concrete driveway and then drive over them several times. Black walnuts are much better tasting than it’s cousins English/Persian. Good luck Bill

Chris,

Yeah, that was a heart breaking last 60 seconds loss.

That must be nice freezing temps by Saturday here, my season is over.

Same here…La Crosse is showing 28F for Saturday morning. I might cover a few flowers.

I have some unripe peppers I will cover. i see here they upped the temp now to just above freezing, good!

Looks like a nice freeze event for a lot of the NE USA…

I would say the newest Euro (weather model) looks colder…i’d say widespread 20Fs for most of WI for low (maybe some teens?)… Obviously clouds/winds can play havoc with temps so stay tuned.

Would you mind translating that chart for me, please?

It is an 850mb temp chart (5000ft temps)… IT varies for time of year what you can expect for temps… 0C is the white line… the white line this time of year usually would tell you if precip falls…bet that it will be snow. With subzero 850s, long nights/calm winds (should that occur)…expect some frost/freezes to occur.

Local areas can have hot/cold spots…around here in winter…i can be -20F while the surrounding bluffs can be sitting at 0F…its just the cold air draining down into the valleys. Add snow cover to the mix and temps plummet even more.

Here is the GFS (weather model) showing some overnight lows (surface temps) …ugly

and here is the GFS showing surface temps at the same time as the Euro map above…

It was in the 70’s in RI today. The map is really off in my state.

The maps are for 96hrs and 138hrs from when the model was run (12z)…so they are for Sat and Mon…

Upper 50Fs here today, but tomorrow should be upper 60Fs…and sunshine. Nice weather overall…we had very strong winds yesterdys. Leaves are almost at fall peak now.

Love those maps. Really good stuff.
