What's happening today?

No snow yet, but we all just have that feeling that when it falls, it won’t stop. Still raining and more rain is predicted. Its back down into the 40’s though, so hopefully the buds will stop swelling on my trees. I saw two Azaleas in bloom last weekend.

It is cold here in Missouri now too. I was at my parents house today and Mom said she had daffodils and some tulips that had started to grow. It is supposed to be down into the teens the next couple of nights so it will remind the plants it’s not spring yet.

Snow on Mon night into Tues and turned into ice. I thought traveling yesterday was bad, this Wed morning was worse. My driveway, like everybody’s else here turned into a skating rink.

Then, I work in a city where city officials made a wrong call by not plowing steeets thinking snow would melt by today. Wrong!!!

Needless to say, even the city’s fire truck slid and slided and sustained damage, too. More ice tonight. At least I am home safely now.

To me, an icy road condition is the worst.

I agreed with you 100% about icy street especially when the car started spinning out of control due to black ice and you just pray other car won’t hit you.

It was a gray day. We enjoyed our compulsory meal of pork loin, collards, and black eyed peas. The grandkids came over, saw that I’d cleaned the pool after the mess that the most recent rains and leaf fall had made of it, and decided that swimming would be a good idea. They insisted the water wasn’t too cold. So, I let them jump in, figuring that they’d be in and out in seconds. I had nice thick towels at the ready. They spent over half an hour repeatedly jumping in and swimming across without shivering or turning smurf colored. The temperatures had dropped and it was only in the low 60’s. I consider that to be chilly, but I guess to 6 and 8 year old boys it was an opportunity not to be passed by. It certainly was a different way to spend a New Year’s afternoon.

gorgeous moss, pool, and fungus!

Are you in way of the floods?

Temps have dropped back down to normal. Hoping I can accumulate some chill hours.

I live on a hill and we are at the breaking point between two different watersheds. We still had flooding though, all of the little “dry creeks” and every ditch or draw was running water. I could only get to my house from the north. It just goes down really fast here after the rain stops.

Long range looks more typical winter weather around these parts. Looks like until then (next weekend) we stay sunny and mild (upper 20Fs/low 30Fs)…winter is really humming along now. Can’t wait to start all my seeds (i start onions very early).

I took advantage of the snow to water the sheltered pots.

What are you growing inside the shoes, Tony?

Very funny! A bunch of non-astringent Asian persimmons and some stratified American persimmon and pawpaw seeds for future rootstocks.

Tony…a week from now real winter cold looks to show up in the plains and then ooze east over here…maybe some single digit high temps and below 0F overnight lows for that Jan 11th to 15th stretch.

If that is the case then the light bulb will be turn on for my 8 yrs old Non-astringent Ichi Kei Ki Jiro and the Hybrid Nikita’s Gift for Winter protection.

Up-potted some American persimmon seedlings. Threw a blanket over some of my figs. Winter has finally arrived in Maryland. Overnight low of 8 degrees F forecast here.

Also potted up the wonderful Triple Crown and Newberry starts that @BobVance sent me. Really robust tip-roots on those. Very exciting.

These will be planted in-ground in the spring.

All potted plants have been put in the basement to ride out winter, except for my Northcountry blueberry which has anti-freeze in its veins. It’ll be fine.

My fig collection is growing. More rooting varieties put into cups today. Mwoohaha! (insidious laughter)

This really isn’t anything for this area…but its still the first “cold” snap of the year… we still haven’t seen single digits this year.

Well, I can say that you’re one person I’m not the slightest bit interested in visiting this time of year. It would require investing in an entire new wardrobe. My teeth would be chattering so hard that I wouldn’t even be able to hear anyone talk, much less say anything in return.

I think weather like that calls for a blazing fire and lots of warming drinks.
