Looked all over and found nothing at the box stores. Are turnip seeds usually that hard to get? I’m not interested in the root, looking to grow the greens. Maybe they sold out early in the season. I see them online, but nothing local.

My Asian market has some..
True leaf has an Asian seed line which is where I got mine this year. Turnips in general are hard to find. Sometimes I can’t even find them in groceries despite them being super storable

I’ve got about 8 lbs of purple top turnip seed in my storage bin. Most will get planted here soon if it ever rains again.
I bought the seed online though…

Do you have a typical “feed & seed” type farm store, like Co-Op, Southern States, Farm & Fleet, etc.?
The local Southern States farm supply store here will have Seven Top & Purple Top turnip seed available in quantities from 1 Tbsp up to several hundred pounds, at virtually any time.

A pound of seed for less than $8 might as well get the pound. I really like Outside Pride they are one of my favorites. I received clover seed from them yesterday pre enoculated. I’m heavy seeding clover in my grape vineyard. Reasonable prices, fast and reasonable shipping, and good quality.

I do buy 50 lbs of seed at a time - I just did buy tillage radish, oat, and pea for cover crops.
However, I used to have just a small 20’x20’ yard and only half was a garden. I’d never even use more than a few seeds from any packet. One little packet would last me many years.

Look in sporting goods or farm stores. Pretty common for use in deer food plots. Some are blends but you can get purple tops pretty easily. Usally you can get them in smaller packages.
Or deer food plot places on line.

I use them instead of potatoes. Potatoes will spike your sugar if you are type 2 diabetic and at least for me turnips don’t. I use them just like potatoes, Mashed, fried with scrambled eggs, corned beef and cabbage soup. I haven’t tried them baked. Just add some Frank’s RedHot it makes everything taste better.

as a fellow diabetic, look up resistant starches. if you cook things like potatoes rice etc and let them cool down then reheat them their glycemic index goes wayyy down

My favorite way to cook turnips that makes them mouthwateringly tasty is to cook them in a pot roast with some cabbage. This gives both an unbelievably great flavor. IMO turnip, rutabega, or cabbage aren’t too exciting if simply boiled in water. Cook them in a pot roast in a Dutch oven and they are heavenly. Even if you hate turnip or rutabega, you may be very pleasantly surprised if you try them cooked this way.

Rutabaga lover here; I’d never had one until I was probably 50, though I recall my grandmother growing them in her garden. On a visit with an aunt, she had cooked one, and I instantly fell in love.
Peeled & cubed, she boiled them in water with 1 Tbsp brown sugar, 1Tbsp butter, and 1-2 tsp chicken bullion. Soooo good.

I love rutabaga! When I grew up we never ate them. But while I high school I worked at a supper club in the evenings. Every Saturday the owner cooked up rutabaga and carrots as the vegetables of the day. They came in big burlap sacks and we had to peel and cut them up in the restaurant kitchen.
I developed quite a fondness for them. Peeled, cubed and boiled.
I tried growing them once but some sort of insect tunneled into a bunch of them. The ones at the supermarket much better in quality. Now I just buy them.
