Why do you grow asian pears?

It is my opinion that asian pears are much better at keeping than European pears. That is why i grow so many asian pears. Why do you grow asian pears? Do you prefer the flavor? Texture?

I have a multi-grafted tree since I live in the city. I like asian pears because they are juicy and sweet, but not sickeningly so. Keep well for me. Great addition to oatmeal!

Im trying the Chinese fragrant pears that we discussed in another thread… but out of everything that i have the deer seem to love them the most. No fruit yet just planted…but there must be something good in them for the deer to select them so highly.

Also hoping for Megistsu (Century Farms only)… that i can tell.

his description was-
Meigetsu Asian pears are pleasantly sweet with the flavour and aroma being compared to pineapples, watermelon, and butterscotch. The flesh is somewhat softer than other Asian pears, making the texture more akin to that of European pears.

Also Shinglo which is another oddity. It shows up on some old papers but is very obscure.

I think i may have all known or available cultivars going… at least the interesting ones.

Why am i growing them? A distant neighbor that i rarely visit… has two trees in his yard in a terrible shaded spot. They seem to be doing well and he raves about them. Not to mention they are at my local farmers market and i really enjoy that folks are growing these locally.

I like things that require no spray and very little attention to thrive and these seem like a wonderful addition to my passion.

I prefer the taste overall to European pears. However I do plan on getting a few European pears in the future just cause. Plus Asian pears do better in culinary uses outside of fresh eating.

I grow pears and Asian pears because friends whom I trust told me that I ought to add them to my list of fruit trees to grow. I am so very glad that I am growing Asian pears. Earlier this year I harvested my first ever fruit from the large variety of fruit trees that I planted in 2023.

That Shinko Asian pear was so, so much better tasting than the ones I had tried over the years when a relative who grew up in South Korea had shared ones they had purchased at local Asian grocery stores in the correct season. I’m so looking forward to growing many more of all of my pear trees.

I grow Asian pears because they taste great and most years I get a decent crop to survive the early cold weather.

My wife introduced me to the fruit a few years ago. I really like the crispness (for apples I only eat crisp varieties) as well as the pear flavor.

The Hmarts carry them but I don’t have super close and the ones they have tend to be overly watery without that much flavor. Some of the higher end grocery stores have them seasonally but not always that easy to find otherwise.

Local nursery had them and they actually do very well in my climate. Probably the only grocery store fruit where you can do no spray and still get a decent crop. I do spray to get more consistent fruit though.

I have 2 trees and in my fourth year of growing and got 20-30 lbs of pears this year.
