Wickson vs Eden Zone 6a Michigan report

Hello, I just thought I would give a report from my orchard.
Here at my site in zone 6a Eden and Wickson are similar apples with similar flavor. Here Eden is the much better and easier to grow variety. Eden ripens mid october and Wickson ripens much later. Still not quite ready now. Wickson also cracks really bad here.
Most Eden apples are larger than wickson.
If I could only grow one of these it would be Eden for sure.

I wonder why Wickson gets so much love/attention and Eden is largely unknown?

My guess is that wickson performs much better in warmer climates.
Stephen Edholm really likes it at his location in California.

Wickson also seems much easier to source. I didn’t a lot of time trying to find an Eden scion today, but I couldn’t do so with a few short searches. Wickson scions can be had from many sources. Is this a proprietary issue due to their being Etter varieties?

I’ve been looking for a late ripening fresh eating crab and they seem pretty rare. Clarks crab is the only one making that claim.

ya, I found that source too. I’m not paying for anymore internet/mail order trees, but would happily pay for a scion or two.

Madcat has tons of crab scion, but I’ve never heard of most of them.

Link?

Two pages. Let me know if you see any late ripening fresh eaters.

OMG…that place has scions that could have only come from one guy I know. Long Prairie Crab is one of my finds, it should actually be named Long Prairie VFW crab. Buckman and the “Dog” series of crabs are from a guy I know 35 minutes southeast of here. I don’t know where MadCat sourced those scions., but I know where the mother trees are located…too funny. The internet is a bit scary at times

Yeah, they have another one that comes from the same state, same description, and suspiciously looks and sounds just like Clarks Crab. They do have a big selection of apples in general. Did you see any late ripening fresh eaters? Never heard of most of them.

Wickson does really well in cool PNW. I don’t have Eden or Clark’s.

5 of their varieties are from central MN.

A good number of the other varieties I recognize, but they have a few I’ve not heard of.

Kerr is relatively late ripening here, early to mid October

Several of the unknown varieties they claim they found including the Clarks Crab lookalike. I just find it odd both of them are in Kansas and they claim they found it in Kansas. And it looks and sounds exactly like Clarks. They must know somebody if they got local unknown varieties several states away where you are. We need them to join GF so we can solve the mysteries.

I’m guessing I know where they sourced the MN varieties, but I’m just guessing. The Kansas crab does sound awfully similar to Clark’s

I will send sticks of Eden to anyone who wants them. I am not very organized though, so if you want them, send me a message during pruning season and I will pack them up and ship them to you. Postage is on me as I would really love to see this variety widely grown.

Looking for any other apple or pear varieties in exchange? I’d love to get an Eden scion but would happily send something back.

I have just planted 26 new apple varieties, so I am burned out on grafting. I now grow 60 varieties. I say that every fall though, so I am sure I will be looking for new things this winter.
I am looking for apples with very unique and interesting flavors.

Got Frostbite and Tolman Sweet?

I have them both. I just planted Frostbite. I have been growing Tolman sweet and it’s one of my favorites.
