upper 80’s today with a good breeze. think we broke a record yesterday or close to it. had a brief shower come though around 3 yesterday. literally turned to steam as it hit the asphalt. for about 3 hrs after you couldn’t see the mountains it was so muggy. the windows in the house all fogged up. thank God we replaced our old a/c with a new one a month ago. we would have been pretty uncomfortable. us northern folk have think blood like my father used to say.
Yeah, quite familiar with the steaming asphalt and muggy heat except that we seldom get the rain after it turns hot. We have fairly high humidity all the time though so the heat here in East Texas is smothering. Hope it cools off for you. Been hearing of the high temps in Bangor on the weather reports.
I’ve not taken the plunge to protect my orchard with a deer fence yet. This hot and incredibly dry weather has resulted in an early incursion. Young tree leaves completely removed down to the biggest branch. I was wondering how to prune them but that decision has been made for me.
I do use a water blast deterrent and it seems to help. Also we were gone on vacation and my dog was at a kennel. I think having him out peeing all over the yard is somewhat helpful so now he is back. Helpful in this case but often destructive. Mostly why I prefer female dogs because they don’t pee on every bush they encounter.
Nice camo pattern for a wood chipped foodforest dwelling frog.
If he had not jumped… doubt I would have noticed him.
Trev: I am pretty sure that is a toad. Great camo pattern!
My Bavays gage hasn’t produced fruit yet, but apparently it’s good for eggs. I thought it was a quail that flew off, but quail lay eggs on the ground don’t they?
I’m no expert, but I’d guess that is a dove nest.
Most likely, dove make the worst nests of all time. A dove nest looks like gravity built it, just a random assortment of sticks fell and happened to land on the branch. This nest is definitely not great, but most dove nests I’ve seen look like the eggs will fall out.
They have fallen out of our doves’ nest this spring. Sorry for them (protected species and all) but it was above our frequented walkway so…
cute little guy. ![]()
Dove are protected? Is it a rare subspecies or what
Yes, columba palumbus. The only protected one, I believe.
Last night I was steaming off sitting in the dark on our garden terrace after a kitchen accident that resulted in burnt and smoked White transparent apple sauce and an enamel pot stuck to the ceramic stove top and glass chipped upon removal. I thought our dog came out after me huffing and puffing in the grass. Turned out this youngster came to commiserate:
What is that thing?
It’s a hedgehog. We don’t have them here in the US.
A grunting walking pin cushion.
More commonly seen as a prickly ball when spooked, but ours seem to be chill.
that’s a late nest. most of the robin’s chicks already hatched and fledged here. maybe laid a 2nd batch of eggs?
Surprised me, too. I’m guessing a second brood. They can do three, and a fourth is not unheard of.
Pollinating tomatoes is a risky job, when there are flower spiders lurking around.
This one seems to be living on the edge deliberately - chilling in a pot while the ducks are just around the next tree, as I don’t have the heart to lock them up for the night while it is so hot during the day.
