Wildlife in our gardens

I had a recluse bite on my front leg right below the knee. The dime size hole wouldn’t heal for 6 months. Antibiotics or any other treatment are useless. This is deep dead tissue that has to clear and new tissue grow from inside out

I found 4 snakes at once when moving some mats. 2 pictured here are ring neck snakes (this is the first time I’ve seen a ring neck snake with this mottled pattern)

Same 2 ring neck snakes (better view of the odd color)

Milk snake (I think- initially I thought it was a baby black rat snake). The 4th snake (not pictured) was a ring neck snake.

Mildly graphic wildlife store coming (stop reading if squeamish).

About a week ago as my wife and I were getting ready to start our morning run, we let the dogs out of the backyard (into the rest of our fenced area). There was a deer in the fenced area, and my dogs starting chasing her. She was running towards a fence and I expected her to easily float over the fence (5’, ~1.5 m). She bounced off the fence, and fell down (possibly stunning herself by running into a brace crossbar (?)). Once of my dogs latched onto her head. Eventually I was able to get my dog to let go. She was still lying down (and possibly seizing). I was hoping she might get up if we left (possibly she was just stunned/frozen with fright). When we got back, she was still there, but dead. In my blueberry patch.

While I’m glad she won’t be eating my fruit, I also hate to see any animal suffer. I generally love wildlife, but I’d rather see certain animals on the other side of my fence.

she probably had a underlying condition. deer don’t die that easily. likely she would have passed later on anyway.

This one I’m not letting go…

That rough green grass snake is lovely.

Nothing like that lives in WA state. Sometimes blue racers here have a greenish cast; all are very smooth & strictly hunt on the ground (to the best of my knowledge). They move fast, are hard to catch & will strike when you manage to get one in hand.

No box tortoises, either. Enjoy!

I was thinking she may have injured herself on the fence (brace post). She looked pregnant, and she was running well prior to not jumping. The other option was my dog pierced her skull (although that seems unlikely). I didn’t do a necropsy, so I’ll never really know.

I used to find those box turtles in Louisiana and Mississippi when I was young. Rare and wonderful turtle!

It’s been so hot that even the chipmunk had to rest.

Stayed in that splayed position for at least ten minutes.

@kkirkt … when leaving the woods from a squirrel hunt several years ago… a 4 point buck ran across the logging road just ahead of us…

There was an old barbed wire fence there with just the top wire remaining. He caught his horns on the barbed wire as he ran thru and broke his neck.

Died pretty quick right there beside the road.

We put the meat to good use.
