I was out surveying to see how much damage rutting bucks had caused to various young trees yesterday. Saw something ‘shining’ just across the creek, and drove down there… the beavers are back… there was a big green ash - probably 2’+ diameter, that had had all the bark stripped off, recently, up to a height of probably 4 ft… so there’s at least one BIG beaver in residence. Didn’t take a pic, but maybe I’ll go back and shoot one to insert here.
Thus far, no evidence of them cutting any of my 25 y.o. pecans in the riparian bufferstrip, but every few years, they show up and cut down a few. I’ll have to be on guard for them attacking any that have been topworked to improved pecan or hickory varieties. Probably need to go ahead and put a cage on those, just to be safe.

theres a family of canadian lynx that come and hunt birds at our neighbors bird feeder at the end of our road here. hes sent us some vids. last year she had 2 kittens. this year only 1. his property abbuts a 300 acre wooded parcel owed by a guy downstate. its mostly older growth with no one living on it and pretty mountainous. prefect for lynx. the mothers about 40lbs. beautiful animals. hes tried raising chickens but between all the predators there he gave up.

Amazing creatures. I’d love to see one some day

If it lives in America it’s an American lynx  The name is Canada Lynx like Canada goose

im blessed we have a very good population up here and see them often driving our numerous logging roads on commercial timberland. the state of Maine calls them canadian lynx and bobcat just bobcat. not as many.of those because of the large lynx population. ive watched them hunting with them not even paying me attention. my brother has a blown up picture of 1 sitting on the opposite bank of the river his hunting lodge is on watching the goings on on his property. very cool.

Must be a New England thing. I know their “real” name, but I have never heard anyone here say “Canada Geese”…just Canadian Geese.

As for the Canada Jay, they will always be Gray Jays to me.

Should i be concerned with the red squirrels?

Been trying to make friends with the Ravens but three stellar jays like me more. Now 2 tiny red squirrels have discovered the food area. Chat juh-peh-tay said that red squirrels are better to have around than grey squirrels and they reproduce less but i dunno…

Stellar jays are a bad omen. No other bird has stolen more fruit from me. Two seasons ago a flock of them stole every peach I had in one raid. They speared the fruit with their beaks and flew away with them. Didn’t spare a single tree. Poof, no peaches.

They just started coming by the other day. Never seen them before. I was putting out peanuts for the Ravens but no Ravens, only a large flock of jays.

thier eastern cousins, the blue jay is just as bad plus they kill other birds eggs / babies.

they are all bushy tailed rats. more fires caused from them getting in structures an chewing wire than most anything else.
