Will it Take?

Let’s see who can make the worst graft that takes, Winner get’s luckiest grafter of the year award.

Here is my contribution. Do you think it will take? Hybrid Plum, on Wavit rootstock.

I’ll update on success or failure in a couple months.

You need to show other side) This side will not take)

The other side is flush for the side, top an bottom not so good.

Then it has a chance, I guess

I assume you wrapped the graft union after taking this pic

Just curious why did you chose this grafting method? Craft graft would be easier, IMO.

Yeah rubber band and parafilm. I was doing modified cleft for these earlier in the day but then I was thinking I still usually end up with just one side that has the cambium lined up and the one sided flat cut of the W&T was easier to get on the first couple cuts compared to the cleft graft scions parallel sides sometimes costing me extra scion material to remedy bad cuts.

One of my mulberry grafts yesterday looked almost that bad, but I never take pictures of the ugly ones until they are wrapped up, to hide my shame (:joy:). I’ll try to remember to come back to this thread to update when it either dies or takes, and I’ll cut off the wrapping to reveal what is hidden here to compare to yours:

I’ve got a few that are so ugly I hate to see them. Experience is the best teacher!

What’s funny is even the ugliest seem to look perfectly fine later. These were two of my very first avocado grafts, badly cut and badly healed for awhile, but two years later they look at least OK, and in another year or two it may be hard to find them:

Nope. Not the ones I’m talking about! Fifteen, twenty years later, still ugly. A regular reminder to me to pay closer attention to the details. : -)

Do you have any recommendations on where to purchase Wavit rootstock?

whip and tongue works great with just one side of the cambium lined up. It’s still a very strong union

I am in Europe I got them from Stahl Baumschule, sorry my answer won’t apply for Minysoda <3

Dont have any ugly ones to show. But below is one of many whip/tounge grafts done last spring.

Prok persimmon scion to wild DV.

Beautiful graft. In the bottom picture it looks like an alligator eating something.

W/T grafts of equal diameter produce the most beautiful looking grafts.

The Z graft produces the ugliest result. It looks lumpy even after years! BUT it is a great graft for dissimilar diameters

I’m always amazed with the percentage of bark grafts on old pears that take. Lift the bark, shove it in, nail it in place, throw some wax on it. Most end up pretty ugly. Even about 90% of the ones I had to do right before it was 80+ degrees for a week right after grafting took.

I manage some pretty ugly W/Ts when I use pretty thick stuff :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:. Mostly just apples and pear field grafts since I know they’ll take almost every time.
