i also have younger ones in pots that are growing good too, also no cold damage, but these were better protected and never got exposed to temps below 40F
@jamie are your plants seed-grown or did you get them from a nursery? I’m curious how old they might be.
i don’t know how old they are, i got the two smaller ones from Wanderlust Nursery last year and the larger ones (in ground) were from Green Dreams, the larger ones have one third inch thick trunks, so I am guessing the small ones are about a year old and the larger ones are at least 2.5 years old.
Which would make your large bushes younger than my tiny plants! My two seedlings were from Wanderlust in winter 2020/2021 and planted in the ground in March 2021, so they are currently going on 4 years from seed, over 3 years in the ground, and still under a foot tall, with the thickest stems still thinner than a pencil at ground level.
They seem happy enough here, but definitely slow-growing. I think mine will be that size in 15 years.
that’s surprising since even in the winter these were growing albeit slowly, but they have been growing pretty fast the past month, they seem to love the heat and humidity here, i read that they were fast growing and can fruit as early as 3 years.
I agree about growing in the cold, but they slow down a lot. One of mine actually went dormant in early fall, so only grew from May to September, while the other was still growing slowly in January when it got freeze damage. Once they get freeze damage they seem to not grow again until at least May.
I am guessing they need warmer nights for rapid growth. Even in our hottest months the lows are often in the 40s and rarely above the mid-50s °F. Some things really slow down at those temperatures, and this seems to be one of them. Healthy, but slow growth most of the growing season. And slight frost damage every winter, which has made them more multi-trunk.
How old is your tree, Luis?
Maby 3 years here but i already got her big.
I got five of these from him as a freebie/apology for something else being out of stock. They arrived looking ready to go in soil!
It was the “Sweet Rare” one , but looks like it’s being labeled Myrcianthes sp. negro so seems like he still hasn’t identified the species.
Mine came the same
My seedling guabiju are coming along. They arrived presprouted and very dry and the growing tip on most of them died either before arrival or shortly after planting. Despite that, all six eventually came up! I’ve never seen a seed that could lose its top before even seed leaves and then just shrug it off and try again. This last one took probably close to three months to come up. Tough plants.
The two potted plants I got from Green Dreams have grown very quickly.
Myrcianthes and eugenias are tough (and are very alike). I had alot of tip dieback from overwatering (which has been fixed) and they kinda just push a new sprout out, or split at the die back and make new stems. My jabos also have shown this resilence, so its probably a common trait of the Myrteae tribe, although probably not all of them have it.
Fascinating looking fruits! I find this thread very interesting!

I recently had 2 cases: a red jaboticaba, where the tip was dried as well. A second shoot came up from the tiny roots. And a cherimoya: the tip of the shoot with 2 tiny leaves trying to open up was broken, cut from the stem. It started growing again at the place of the cut. I had never seen this either.
I don’t see them on their site, those look nice tho
There was like one left after I ordered mine, which was a few months ago.
There were also very not cheap for their size. I regret that somewhat…
