Oh, if they are supposed to have pink/red flowers, I guess I don’t have them. And the wholesaler for the big box stores has it mislabeled. Very white flowers.
should I tell him?
I comment on his videos a lot, him and I are subscribed to each other
I think so… alot of folks on youtube, and the social medias buy/grow things based on pictures and videos. Myself included. Osage and Natchez are both worth growing i think…so not much harm done so far.
Here is another example-
‘We made the tough decision today to cut out and remove completely 5 of our rows of Big Daddy blackberries. This is a 2 year setback but will be worth it in the long run. They were a very new variety and we were one of the first in the country to plant them in a large setting but unfortunately they did not live up to our standards. Berry size was great but they severely lacked sweetness, growth habits did not align with our goals and ripened a little late for this texas heat . We only want to grow the best and grow berries that far exceed supermarket bought berries. These were too tart for our liking and we’ve observed customers shying from them too.’
If you read between the lines its possible he wasnt even growing Big Daddy in the first place. Hard to know…but posts like this that was seen by thousands totally change peoples perspective.
The same guy really hyped up Big Daddy a year before this post and was low key flexing so i of course wanted to see how that worked out for him.
I find this link every few years… its very good for history and other information. The Mac Black history and description seems truer than many other sources. I think its a hybrid.
I ran into Lowe’s in Clarksville, Indiana today to see what plants they had. Mostly flowering annuals and perennials are out. Saw no fruit trees and few bushes.
They did have a table full of Osage blackberries in quart pots for $13.98. No other blackberries at all right now. Also had a few figs in quart pots and some potted strawberries. That was about it for fruits. So if anyone is looking for Osage without having to pay shipping, maybe your local Lowe’s might have them. Although, as discussed above, who knows if they are labeled correctly or not.

Lowe’s has many of the same varieties as last year. A couple new ones, though. Munger (Bristol) and Coho. Home Depot only had Sweetie Pie potted plants. I would be surprised if there’s not at least another shipment of berry plants by this time next month.
How do I encourage new raspberry and blackberry patches to increase in plant density? People often say how they can’t keep up, that new plants pop up really fast. However, I planted my raspberries 3 years ago and there havent been many new plants…
You can try severing the roots with a shovel where you want a new plant. That will force those roots to send up new shoots
so far this season the main thing that has shocked me is just how productive the 30+ year old thorny varieties are compared to newer ones, at least for me in my back yard
These varieties are already flowering:
- Brison from Womack
- Womack from Womack
- Rosborough from Womack
- “Lawton” from Berries Unlimited (possibly mislabeled)
- “Cherokee” from eBay guy (possibly mislabeled)
- “Shawnee” from eBay guy (possibly mislabeled)
- “Cheyenne” from eBay guy (possibly mislabeled)
They are LOADED with flowers for their size, especially the eBay guy’s plants. I’m pretty sure they are all mislabeled (I’m 100% positive that his Rosborough is not Rosborough), but damned if they aren’t flowering like crazy*
*eBay guy’s “Rosborough” is 3-4 weeks later than everything else, so it’s just now starting to produce tiny flower buds while everything else is actively flowering. Although like @krismoriah said, that thing suckers like CRAZY, so unless the berries taste outstanding then I will probably pull it because I can’t keep up with that in my back yard. It’s in-ground and I’ve probably had 8+ suckers come up in all directions 6 feet from it in the past year
Everything in this video is grown in a container and only one year old!
also got a shot of the bees working on some Brison in a home depot container:
Hey, this year I’m getting a little tardy on pruning out my blackberry patch, so things are beginning to sprout out now. Interestingly, I noticed that many of last years “spent” florocanes on my TC didn’t die, and now they’re sprouting out, too.
Even some a few of the last year’s fruiting laterals are still somewhat alive and also sprouting:
Does anyone know what happens if I just leave them?
If they keep producing and don’t die, keep them and breed them a forever berry lol
Anyone have a legit niwot?
How long do the canes get until they fruit for the primocane canes?
I got one from stark many moons ago but it’s never produced. Not even on 10ft long canes. I may have already asked this but i forgot so I’m asking again… i think it may have been mislabeled. Thinking about grabbing one from Gurneys if they do produce in shorter than 10ft canes
Probably more likely are that those arent TC. I see flower buds forming and the timing is right for that to be something like PA Freedom or Traveller floricane fruits.
my ‘niwot’ didnt produce on primocanes and ‘ohio’s treasure’ beside it did… so i too reckoned that i received the wrong plant…so i removed it.
Im guessing that Nourse would be the most reliable for true to name.
Im not sure many folks actually like Niwot… not sure if its worth growing. Mac Black is…but its a fcane fruiting one.
So last year i got a Joan j from Restoring Eden that i grew and ended up giving to Stan cause the flavor was so off for me… but everyone here keeps saying JJ is supposed to taste amazing… I’m wondering if soil ph changes fruit flavor sometimes because my yellow ann in Colorado Springs did terrible and actually tasted like Joan J but my Washington yellow ann was delicious!
In Colorado, the water made my soil alkaline which affected some fruit tastes i believe. However my Caroline, polka, and heritage there tasted amazing along with the PAF’s.
I’m thinking about attempting another Joan J along with Tahi…
Planning on planting the best ones in ground somewhere after this year.
I added Tayberry this year too from RE and got some runts of thornless Logan and thornless Boysenberry from scenichill which i keep regretting cause they send small/ really young things
Where did you get your niwot from?
do i really want 5 canes each of tahi and niwot
but gurneys sells them for almost 20$ a cane
I’m reading their description and it says shipped as plant plugs. Any chance you know how big those are from them?
