Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

Damn you’re making me feel guilty my blacks will probably grow anywhere and the berries are the size of a quarter. The primocane berries are as good as the summer fruit, just bigger!
I guess I need to spread it around.

Drew, have you created a primocane black Raspberry as well?

Two actually
I also have seeds of a third that Pete Tallman (breeder of Niwot) gave me. I think it’s Bristol x Niwot. I need to grow out. They are frozen.
Anyway I used Ontario yellow which has been in my garden for 14 years. Vigor is still amazing. I plan to grow more out in the future. Trying to make a thornless primocane black at present.

Lemme know if you want to find out their heat tolerance

Tried it in zone 3b. Canes die back to snow line.

Should have said tried Niwot in 3b.

Those are Jim Fruth’s words not mine.

I think i tried for 5 years to get things that you mentioned you wanted to spread around in various threads and i have never obtained anything… so i just obtained them elsewhere.

Alot of them will.

As far as heat tolerant Jewel and Cumberland have been grown in much warmer climates than most nurseries list. Probably others as well but those are the ones from memory that i have seen reports from growers in the deep south and some on the west coast.

I have spread around most everything that i have to members on here and will continue to do so.

If there are folks on here that want to try growing different black rasps or other hybrids… Shona sells nice cuttings…usually available in Jan/Feb.

I sent cuttings out once. None made it from the reports. I will get some rooted plants out when possible. I started and gave away about six plants then I started having major health problems. That has not ended. Feb. 4 I’m having a six hour surgery. Feb. 5 a second six hour surgery. If I survive and also recover after a couple months of therapy are over. I will try and root some plants.

Root cuttings to me are the easiest way to propagate. But nobody wants root cuttings… they want potted 2 year old plants mostly.

So i am on year 2 of some Whyberry that someone asked for… as i grew them from root cuttings.

I talk to a fellow in California that says he sells about 500 Ollalie plants per year all from root cuttings off of a couple of plants…

I have mostly failed rooting dormant cane cuttings…

Best wishes with your surgeries. I look forward to reading about your growing endeavors when you recover.

How do you take root cuttings. You probably posted this just point me to it if you don’t mind.

This site goes way more into depth about the benefits of growing from root cuttings than i ever could.

Pense, Womack and various nurseries sell root cuttings as well.

Probably every plant that womack sells is grown this way… as its very successful at propagating brambles.

Since you say that your plants will make it anywhere… Jim Walla in ND is the one who brought us Amethyst Purple back as well as Wyoming Purple rasp… Trader Mulberry and Northrop as well.

If you want to bring these forward to growers that would be excited to grow things in those colder climates he would be a great resource.

Thanks to him we have Amethyst Purple.

i bet Hartmanns would be interested also. they like to carry very cold hardy fruit. i got my traders mulberry and amethyst rasp. from them.

just find the end of a root and cut a section off. they dont go very deep. most are in the top 1-3in. if you dont find the end and cut it in the middle. the end left will make another plant.

Thanks for the info. I have to test them to really know how hardy. I’m happy with my three primocane fruiting purples and don’t need more. One tastes like boysenberries. I have heard purples can be dull in flavor. I get that because the others are like that. Ok not great. But that first purple is in another league. It might be me. I think I can best that size too. The purples are from my blacks (Sterling black and Lynn’s black) Both have fairly large fruit. As I have shown. One of my problems is since I’m old I just don’t care if it dies with me or not.
Anybody can do what I did with some luck.

yes they can but who really wants to improve on a berry unless theres money involved. i dont care about money, but ill happily spread this around to other like mined people that would appreciate it. my son has 9 acres of old fields id love to plant these on. his girlfriend loves fruit and baking with it. id name it Drew’s Delight Black Raspberry. this way, it would live on.
