Early plums - Naidyonisch (brix - 14) and Dapple Supreme (brix - 17)
Black eyed Susan’s in the field near my orchard… and today’s jam session.
Put a big bowl of berries in the fridge… and going to jam those in that container now.
Nice when you don’t have to buy berries at the store for weeks…
Ok, had a chance to try many more that ripened over the week, as the weather got warmer compared to last week. Man-O-Man I have never had any berry as sweet as this and the fruity flavor was as good as before. The aroma of the ripe berries can be sensed even a few feet away from the plant!!
That’s a good one,Richard. Is it in your collection?
It’s not here, but I’m considering it now. I have Arapahoe, Olallieberry, plus room for a 3rd.
May be I should try some fruits from yours
If the Marion berry doesn’t perform well for another year, I’d like to rip it out and plant another variety. I think this could be a candidate.
Marion has wonderful flavor - like eating a spoon of jam. But it struggles in our heat and is not productive and very thorny. Thorns are the least of the problem but should be productive
Marion is only an average berry down here.
I believe Marion = Chehelam x Olallieberry.
Here is the chart I have for Olallie

We had to pick all the fruits from these trees the last few days because of the birds and squirrels. I was too tired to put on the cover for the trees.
Sweat Treat pluerry: very good, crunchy and sweet, the skin is a little sour
Snow Queen nectarine: very good firm or soft, sweeter when ripe, half of the harvest
Donut peach : everyone likes them, sweet, crunchy, or juicy and soft
Emerald Drop (trees sold as Emerald Beaut): most of the fruits on the trees are still green but these two were very juicy and sweet
Next batch ripening around next weekend if you want to come try! They need to be fully ripe for the best taste but good thing is that it’s a firm berry.
My plant only gets sun from noon to evening and even less in early spring during bloom time, and it’s also a young plant. Next year will tell how productive it is. This year I am getting around 60 to 70 berries.
Today’s jam session… picked on my lunch hour.
The mix includes strawberries loganberries red and black raspberries.
Mmmmm
You are all making me miss growing raspberries and blackberries. They are both in the markets though. Mine were better!
Looks delicious!!
When I started reading berry breeding charts a few years ago, I was surprised to learn that marketers had over-simplified the names of berries in yet another insult to consumers! Much of what is titled “blackberry” in the U.S. is 1/4th blackberry if that.
@MikeC – they sure are… I really like the blacks… but right now with the heat they are all tasting so good. I can pick all ripe ones at noon, and again after work around 5 there will be more ready. I picked logans twice today… and got several deep purple ones just now after work.
I have so many raspberries… and in a few more days my Ouachita and illini blackberries are going to start ripening… they are getting big, fat, red now… won’t be long. Last year got first ripe ones from both on 6/15.
Looks like no peaches this year (bummer), and few if any apples… but the berries are as dependable as ever.

I feel like “surprised” deserves air quotes here… ![]()
In other “berry” news (this time air quotes because both blackberries and strawberries aren’t technically berries), my bird-planted strawberry patch from last year is finally starting to ripen… They are a good size after all this rainfall, hopefully not too watery tasting:
Now strawberries (Rosacea) I believe, but Rubus?
lol! mine are just starting to put out flower buds here.
The (&(&&_&^ birds are eating all the black raspberries before they get black!
I thought the mulberry trees might keep them distracted.
There are more birds in these parts than at any time in my lifetime…going back into the 50’s.
I think too much wildlife has replaced the endangered wildlife of the 1970’s!!!
