Ice fog here this morning so driving or walking is not advised. It has been oddly calm and warm without any sunshine. It is Saturday night / Sunday morning.
Are we going to frost free now? I am going to plant tomatoes tomorrow evening.
Maybe I’ll just plant some tomatoes tonight, looks like it might be chilly Saturday night.
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Plant out only a portion and if they die you still have the remainder. I direct sowed some beans yesterday and will start a small tray indoors to fill in where the weather kills them. I’m gonna say we have one more frost left. It is just brewing in the Arctic still.
Wind speeds in Kansas tend to cut down on people wanting to move here. It has been windy at my location for a couple of weeks. How is everyone else doing? Anyone own a wind generator yet?
wind gusting to 40mph… too windy to be outside working in the garden or orchard, or spray or burn or do any useful work in general!
Have the winds been ripping through your area for awhile now with an occasional break here and there? Think we may be hitting 40 mph towards the end of the day. It is hard to tell the difference between 30, 40, and 50 mph! Very glad i dont have trees full of fruit. All my grafts are cleft this year. Hopefully none will be impacted. It is not fast enough to break limbs yet.
Yes, we have had very high winds with the occasional 10-15mph day.
I agree! Once you get over 25 to 30 mph, it’s hard to tell the difference.
Today’s gusts were over 40, according to a local weather station. Tomorrow is supposed to be much more calm, around 10mph I think.
I have only done a few grafts so far, all clefts. One got hit by brush blowing through the yard and I reset it, but I will probably just make a new graft now that things are calming down.
It sure blew all the blossoms off quickly. Plum, apricot, peach (although we had very few peach fruit buds make it through the winter) most affected. So far Shinseiki (maybe Nijiseiki too), Harrow Delight, and Buford pear are my only pears blooming.
In addition to the 40 mph wind gusts yesterday, we were gifted with 25 degrees this morning. They’re forecasting another late frost this coming weekend as well.
Windy here yesterday as well, 34 degrees at the house this morning, there was frost in the valley below.
Saw this post has been inactive for a bit. How is everyone in the region holding up in 2024? Any words of advice for a newbie down in Oklahoma going into a first summer with planted bare root trees?
Use mulch. It makes an enormous difference in water retention and weeding hassle. I wish I’d realized this when I first started.
Hopefully everyone is ok from Topeka, Lawrence, Kansas City, Manhattan, Salina etc. . We are ok in my area. As your aware it has been over 100 F all week
Well that spawned the type of storms this type of weather does. Topeka and Lawrence and many others got clobbered. I was watching their weather. Their police scanners went nuts, power poles got snapped like match sticks. @randyks @39thparallel what’s the latest from Topeka and Lawrence?

@PaulinKansas6b @39thparallel @Olpea @KS_razerback @KSprairie @TurkeyCreekTrees @Derby42 @randyks @JVD @ctduckhunter @tonyOmahaz5 @NorthOzarksMO @RedRam
and anyone else i may have left off hopefully your safe.
Fine where I am, was milking late when it hit. Sure came hard horizontally.
Thanks! Yeah that wind blew a lot when it hit out here on the Reno/Pratt county line, but everythings fine except a little hay left i was trying to finish baling late evening but thats ok.
Spent about an hour this morning picking up trash and small branches blown into the yard. Near Forbes, I didn’t realize there was that much damage! I don’t watch TV news, am thankful for the 1"rain and cooler temp. Great open window sleeping weather last night.
Just found out that power poles are snapped, much chaos and closed roads just 1 mile north of me…
Kansas has some of the best meaning worst straight line wind storms anywhere i have seen. Glad everyone is ok and we got some moisture!
Ok here in southwest Missouri, just hot and it looks like dry for awhile. The tree trimmers came through and cleared the power lines so hopefully that will help if we do get storms
In Omaha 4 days ago We got wind at around 90 plus mph that classified as a hurricane cat 2. Folks still had power for 4 days now and the current temperature in the 90s with high dew points. Terrible condition without electricity.
