This latest order i made builds on these old threads.

@clarkinks

I’ve got a Thomcord, 2nd year. About a dozen clusters. About 5 decent size.

The first couple are starting to color.

I’ll report out once they are done, assuming this human gets some!

Nice job growing those! They look great!

Looking forward to tasting them. I’ll have to bag these after they dry out. When my netting gets in later this week, will net the fruiting zone.

Had another 1.3” or rain overnight to go with the 4+ inches end of last week. Managed a copper spray in-between the rains.

I’m more proud/happy with my Errante Noir. So far so good.

i have a marquette grape thats a great grower but doesnt produce much. i get about a doz. small clusters. fertilizing only seems to give me more vine. it gets full sun until 230pm. then dappled shade. would that affect the crop size? its has 2 vines going off to each side of the main plant on a 4’x 8’ cattle panel. i usually only give a few shovels of manure. any more i get a extra 30ft. of vine going everywhere.

I am certainly not one to give advice on what might be your issue, but grape vines like to struggle a bit. You may gave too much nitrogen in the soil.

Having said that, I’ve been using the hell out of my Android phone’s Gemini to search for all the info on growing mine. There are pretty specific pruning steps you need to take to produce consistent, well sized clusters.

I have really good fruit set and mine are still growing vigorously. I go out almost daily to manage the shoot lengths and pinching back laterals

It’s been a journey for me. Lots of work actually, but I’m really enjoying it.

I agree with @Shibumi, grapes prefer poor soil to a point. They hate wet feet. A hillside that faces South with thin soil is ideal for them. I planted my concords in heavily fertile soil and there is some wet spots in there. I can only hope it won’t be to much. The concords are pretty adaptable. Many wine grapes and better quality seedless grapes are more finicky. Once the vines are spreading out you might get more clusters.

My Errante Noir are on 1103P. Not particularly known for wet feet tolerance but not horrible at it either.

My 7 vine row is on a raised row once settled of about 10” from grade. I just had ~5.5” of rain over 3 days. The ground in the trough was 100% saturated, but not quite flooded above the weed fiber.

So far so good.

its pretty dry there. i didnt feed them last year. from what ive read they should be alot more productive. the main vine is 1.5in.

You should have an average of two clusters on all your shoots. If you don’t, you either have shoots coming from older wood or the buds those shoots grew from didn’t get enough light last year.

How are you pruning it and how much are you removing? Grapes fruit on 1-year old wood, so if you remove too much of it, your crop will be reduced. Marquette is very cold hardy, so I don’t think you would have cold damage, but if you have late frosts, that can wipe out the shoots, and the replacement shoots that sprout are never as fruitful.

Grapes need a good amount of light to be fruitful. What you have sounds borderline already, but if you also have a lot of vegetative growth, that can shade the basal buds too much for them to develop clusters for next year. That then causes even more vegetative growth the following year and sets you up for a cycle of ever decreasing yields.

The main reason to fertilize grapes is to replace what is lost to the fruit during harvest. If you’re not removing large amounts of nitrogen from the vine, you don’t need to add much back, if any. Since your yield is low, your grapevine isn’t losing a lot of nitrogen to the fruit and fertilizer is unnecessary..

You da man!

One note on two clusters per shoot. That is only on well sized cordon wood….established mature vines. I removed all but one of my second clusters as my vines are only 2nd or 3rd year in the ground.

Interestingly…..I had a few new clusters pop on THIS year’s wood. I have a very robust shoot I am using to replace a badly positioned cordon (it was considerably lower than the other side cordon so did not sprout well). The new shoot/cordon is growing very thick and when I tipped at the length I need, a few of the laterals wanted to fruit. I didn’t know it could do that.

Yes, you are correct. What I meant though is that a normal, healthy vine getting enough sun and proper pruning will produce two clusters (sometimes more or less depending on variety) on almost every shoot coming off year-old wood.

That’s called second crop and is usually a sign of imbalance between carbohydrate production and sinks. Basically, the canopy is producing more sugar than there are fruit, shoot tips, and root tips to put it in, so the vine responds by making lateral shoots with clusters to compensate.

Not a huge issue. You probably could have left more fruit on that vine. If your season is long enough, the second crop can ripen to the point of being useful. I manage one block that produces enough second crop to harvest for wine.

I’ll bet that the lack of growth on one cordon is why you have such a strong shoot with second crop. If you choose to use it as a replacement cordon, note that the primary buds on super vigorous canes are prone to being blind, so if you have lateral shoots, prune them to one bud instead of removing them completely incase the primary bud doesn’t sprout.

i cut my 1 yr. old wood back to 2 buds. i have 2 cordons to the left and right, both top and bottom from the vine thats centered on a 4’ x 8’ cattle panel. i probably dont have them in the most ideal spot but they get full sun from 6 am to 230 pm. then dappled shade. i trim the leaves around the clusters as theyre just starting to ripen. my seasons new growth usually grows out double the cattle panel length to 16ft. so its getting plenty of nutrition.

Perfect. Thanks for the advice.

Yes it’s quite evident that second year vine has too much get up and go for only one side and 3.5 feet of cordon fruiting.

I’m learning as I go. Next season, assuming no issues, I’m going to have a lot of grapes to play with for wine.

I’ll be pruning weekly after harvest to keep them all from becoming a jungle

This is my experimental order above of all the varities below. I’m short about 30 types I want to try next year. Grapes have a fast return.

I’m curious how you are keeping Pierces Disease from killing it. Thomcord should not have any resistance. Are you spraying something to kill the leafhoppers, or has it just not had enough time to show up yet?

You never know that you have PD until you know that you have PD.

Those matchsticks don’t lie though. They probably won’t show up until maybe 6-10 years. Of course in northern latitudes the pathogen is not so bad. Leafhoppers too cold.
