Clark's Crabapple

@steveb4

They will finish ripening in storage like normal if they are pretty far a long. If they are sweet when you bite into them that is a really good sign your in good shape to store them until your ready to eart them. Like tomatoes they have to be past that ultra green apple stage.

Those look perfect! Sounds like you are enjoying them! That tree is loaded! I think it likes it there in Central Kansas! Hows it stacking up against other apples in your orchard? That tree in the background looks good as well! Once they are ripe they are very addictive. I have a hard time not eating several at a time. I like the balanced sweet flavor. It is not just sweet either it has enough balance.

I have three trees of it. Very precocious and productive even on M-111. Low maintenance and disease free for sure. I hadn’t considered growing a crabapple until I saw your posts about this one. I really enjoy the taste. I picked Goldrush and Aztec Fuji today. Have you tried your apple in cider?
The trees in the background are Aztec Fuji. They are very good. Unfortunately, We had a lot of hail damage in August so they aren’t very pretty. I sort and sell the better ones and make cider or process the others.

Anyone know how this one is for fireblight?

Seems to have at least some resistance. I have seen an occasional strike, but it doesn’t go far.

You’re doing great with the fruit trees. it must be a little warmer there. I didn’t have a long enough growing season for Goldrush most years here.

@LarisaLee

It at least has some resistance because my farm is a hot spot for fireblight.

It looks like most of you grew them one year before getting fruit?

yes. planted the tree in may 23’. it had several blooms last year but i pinched them off. had over 50 this spring before the chipmunk thinned it for me.

just harvested 31 apples off of my 5 ft. tree. they are very good. just enough tart to balance the sweet. not hard but not mealy so they’re ripe right off the tree. strangely 2 of the 3 i just ate had no seeds in them. the 1 that did they were only half colored up. ill post pics tonight. headed to church.

I’m in western (but not coastal) Oregon, and fireblight’s our biggest issue. It gets very hot about the same time it stops raining most years. It rained in June and was 105 degrees for over a week and I had a horrible year for fireblight.

That said, if I had this tree I’d have to thin it heavily. It would be hard to do because it’s so heart-stoppingly gorgeous loaded with fruit like that. But wormy things love to hide where fruits touch, and they’re our 2nd biggest problem here. I don’t spray for bugs, just for fungal diseases. I do bag fruit.

I love crabapples because they’re so flavorful… even ones that are too sharp for most people. Going to check out your store.

I dont sell these crabapples myself. I dont have a store. @39thparallel has a store that sells them or one of the people on this thread would get you some scion wood to graft on apple tree you have. I dont make money on this apple in any way or as an admin on the forum. I make my money from my daytime work and occasionally selling fruit.

Trees had a few fruit the first year I planted them. Last year they got hit by a late freeze. This year they were loaded.

Yes I grafted to an established tree in spring of 2023 and am currently harvesting well over a dozen fruit from them.

I forgot to post my pics. ill see if i can do it tom. does flyspeck give apples a bitter taste? the apples taste good but leave a weird bitter taste that sort of lingers. they look like they’re ripe. they’ve been in the fridge crisper for a week after getting hit by 2 heavy frosts. never were sprayed. maybe the tree is just too immature yet.

@steveb4

Fly speck should not do that. My guess is as you said the tree is still immature.
