Figs 2018

The ones in a low spot of an open field have gotten it the worst, some of it is probably wind burn also.

This is the earliest cold weather I’ve ever seen, and I’m in SC.
Our fall lasted only about 6 weeks.

i have the best micro climate i could make. a 6’ high wooden fence encloses my garden. but, a few nights in the low 30s have killed the top leaves on the tall figs.
fruit is still ripening, but slowly.
i’ll lose few figs on my 4 year old trees tho.
here, figs start ripening a whole month earlier in trees that have roots inground for 4 years.
before that point, i get few figs.
i’ll lose most figs from 2 n 3 year olds.

Upper 20s with wind…that’ll kill most exposed leaves, which are now dropping. Plants in more protected areas still have healthy leaves on them. I decided to harvest a bunch of leaves as I really enjoy fig leaf tea, it has a nice flavor. I also harvested all the unripe green figs to make chutney, jam, pickle which I haven’t done before but want to salvage the remaining crop somehow…

Maybe just a dozen or so this year. Next year should be much better as it is a young tree

Yeah mine finished, it’s actually early for an Adriatic type. So you should get figs a lot earlier next year. I’m in 6a. I don’t remember any speckling on mine? I got mine from Fruitnut. It’s usually bigger too.

Those look great!

Mine came from Wills last year. The tree wasn’t in the best shape and he gave me a discount.

adriatics are a pain.
my paradisio bronze has wonderful fruit, but i’ve only got half a dozen so far.
if it’s like my etnas, year 4 should be a month earlier;
if not, it’s not worth my time, great taste or not.

Nice! I like the rimada types.

On Adriatics
My B. Green had a drop of honey on the last ripe fruit. Also was surprising is that all my figs were damaged from freezes except B Green, and Strawberry Verte. They both were more hardy than the Mt Etna’s. They produced well for me this year. Some figs wasted but most ripened for me. So I’m trying more Adriatic types, Yeah SV and BG do not taste alike, similar but subtle differences. Curious about others now.

There was a person near me who grew Green Ischia/Verte in-ground about 25 miles from me. He regularly got fruit ripening around Thanksgiving when it is very cold and rainy here.

It seems like a very interesting variety.

Lot’s of green unknowns around or vaguely named. Like Greek isles is one I’m going to try. Hoping to get an air layer. I have JH Adriatic too, it should fruit next year. So i guess I have them covered. Oh Vasilika Sika VS too! Probably otthers I forgot about that didn’t fruit yet.

I would like to add more rimada’s if the price goes down. But new rule next year, for every fig i add, two have to go. I have no more room and these trees are going to get bigger.
I have a small Fiorone Oro aka Oro Rosato. If I can keep it alive.

I have ORO Rosato. It set a dozen figs and dropped them all. It is supposed to be common but it definitely likes to drop figs atleast in the first year. I’ll be very happy if it sets brebas next year

@PharmerDrewee Is your Adriatic JH in ground?

@hambone yes I have one in ground and one potted. I often keep small ones potted as backups for anything I have in ground, since my zone is marginal for figs.

Thanks. Last winter my first year Adriatic JH croaked here in zone 7 while all others survived. I’ll plant another next spring and bury it better in mulch its first winter.
