The rain here is ruining my figs. Even those in pots in my greenhouse. It seems like it rained every day in June. It rained about 6 times yesterday and is raining again this morning. If it keeps this up, I won’t have any good figs this year. I’ve been through this before. If the sun comes out it will be a month at best before the figs improve by much.
I put rain gutters on my greenhouse because some plants are rooted outside. Rain off the roof really screws up the water regimen of fruits that root outside the GH. It’s especially bad for figs. But can affect all the fruits. Putting a root barrier within the GH to prevent outside rooting would be a priority if I built another GH.
Back into the heat here with dew points climbing near 70F and temps around 90F. Dry week here–cold front Fri/Sat should usher in some “cooler” temps.
Was up just north of Duluth early this week. I was surprised to see a ton of lupine blooming along hwy 61–very pretty. Once you get south of Superior you don’t see any. Lake was freezing cold (wading up to the knees your legs start to go numb). If you are ever there drive up to Enger Park. Also the drive up the lake is fantastic.
I travel up north every summer to get out of this heat for a few weeks. always try to pick a different state and a different area. I will tell you that area around Duluth is my favorite .
another very wet summer. muggy as hell. temps in the low 80’s. hard to keep up with mowing the grass here and at the orchard up the hill. everythings growing well.
Things are great in Surry county NC. Peaches, blueberries are doing great. Apples and bees, not so much due to last year’s holdover issues. Production in the garden has been off the charts. The low this morning was 65 with low humidity. A breeze has picked up due to the low forming down east. It was very hot earlier in the month.
1/4 inch overnight here. Some areas had 2 inches of rain around Black River Falls. Basically all of i94 from Tomah to Eau Claire was getting heavy rain.
Hot hot hot. 92F and crazy humid. Can’t imagine living in an area that has weather like this for months on end. I couldn’t do it. I’m already ready for 50Fs and 60Fs. Why does spring and fall have to be so short.
It’s really not something you can imagine it’s more like a nightmare you live through. Even if I don’t do any real work outside I have to take three or four showers a day . Driving my wife crazy since I saw your picture of Duluth the other day.
I wanted to mention a great app, especially if you do not live near your orchard. Raindrop.farm it really helps me to keep up with my rain totals since I live 80 miles from fruit trees.
Tropical storm-esque weather out there. Windy, on-and-off heavy rains and no sign of the sun. I guess I missed a notification or something. No lightning and its grey not black clouds, so not really a thunderstorm. Very gloomy. This house needed the rain though, the canel was so low the lily pads weren’t even in water.
Still almost a week out, but GFS showing a legit cold front bring down some cool (for July) air. Should see multiple nights in the low 50s and some solid humidity relief. Can’t wait.
theyve been bad here also esp. early and late. mid day we get the horse , moose and deer flies that take a chunk of meat off you before flying away. got me good right through my t shirt while mowing yesterday. they bloody the moose and deers ears and drive them crazy. why the moose roll in swamp mud this time of year. more rain starting tom.
Google says our May had about 7” plus of rain when the average is 4.5”. A bit over average for June. We started off July with a few dry days, but I’m pretty sure we have had rain in every 24 hour period since. Scary to think my region is only supposed to get more 1”+ storms per year. Native landscaping in my county is focusing more and more on rainscaping, and the symposium I attended in the spring had speakers pushing for everyone to be aware of the predictions and how designs and plant choices need to change. I’m new to the fruit world, but I imagine a lot of what I’m planting might be too hard to grow in my climate in 10 or even just 5 years. I wonder if people are planting based on the predications of worsening weather extremes in their area.
And yes, the mosquitos are totally out of control. It’s only a matter of time before malaria is endemic.
