We were hit by a sneaky little frost the other night. Low was supposed to be 6C, but I walked out to see the remnants of the corn, cucumber, melon, pattypan, butternut, and tomatoes foliage destroyed by a frost.
We’re headed back into the low 20’s for the next week - but those crops are done.
A nice reminder to get my ass moving before the Canadian prairie winter blows in.
Yup, the thermometer was reading 0 this morning in Manitoba when I took the dogs outside. Frost across the grass, birdbath water frozen over. Meanwhile this next week is all mid 20’s with lows in the double digits.
Now I expect to see a significant change in the trees as they begin preparing for dormancy.
When it gets cold like that you can almost guarantee the heat will be right back. I don’t see any cool air anytime in the next 10 to 15 days…if anything record heat could be possible…ugh. Only positive is the days are shortening quickly==so the heat doesn’t stick around as long into the evening.
Wow! this looks close to my weather (shen valley in VA)! I thought you might live near me till I saw you’re in the PNW!!! lol.
We went from a super wet, hot early summer (June, July) to dry dry dry Aug Sept (which are usually wet months).
Normally I’d be pretty happy because dry august is good for the fruit but I had barely any fruit set due to a confluence of bad things. =( So now I’m just annoyed that I have to water things.
We had a wet summer, then it abruptly turned dry in mid August, coinciding with a return to strong La Niña conditions. That has been a noticeable trend for the past four years; strong La Niña = drought. There looks to be a slight but not great chance of precip next Wednesday which would make it exactly 1 month without rain. I’m disappointed because this is the exact time of year that it’s most important to get rain to have good mushroom hunting. On the other hand, it has been good for my figs and other fruit that are ripening.
.01 of rain fell. Enough to wet the cement. Overnite the temp dropped to 68F. Today upper 80Fs. Like July again. Next cooler air is next weekend. Summer here is pretty much June-Sept. The only thing that gives Sept a fall like feel is earlier sunsets.
On Sept 24th Fairbanks, AK and La Crosse have same amount of daylength (12 hours). From that point on Fairbanks loses daylight at a much faster rate. They are losing nearly 7 minutes a day while down here we are right around 3 minutes a day.
still holding upper 60’s and 40’s at night. so far have dodged th3 frost so stuff is still growing. hoping to finish off my 4 remaining watermelons but probably wont. the chickens will still enjoy them.
