How is your weather? (Part 2)

bluebird skies right now w/ a 10mph breeze.

May is probably my favorite month (not every May is this nice).

I got a couple of strawberries that are pink. A few more days and they should be ready. I had a bucket of water in the yard a few days ago and there was a fishing spider sitting on the surface–like a mini tarantula. I forgot how big those things get.

Very nice! That’s always a huge relief to the psyche. We’ve been clear now the last couple days. I think we’re going to get very hot this coming week since the jet streams decided to push heat up our way. Wouldn’t mind some rain before that happens, but we’re only northern Upper Peninsula dry, which isn’t dry by the rest of the Midwest’s standards. They’re still standing puddles of water out in the woods from the melt. Should be good for pollination though. 70’s and 80’s but dry and not very humid. It’ll help keep the fire blight at bay. Persimmons and pawpaws are just starting to push their buds. Pretty much everything but the Kentucky coffee trees and jujubes are showing active signs of waking up. My two medlar trees died to the snow-line this year. Too bad, they were about 7 ft tall and had just started fruiting. I don’t know if they just couldn’t take the week of negatives down to -22 we had, or if they were caught unawares by the cold in October. I cut them down to the quick so they could spring back; at least they’re well established. Most of the zone pushing things such as persimmons and dawn redwood had some tip dip back, but they’ll be fine. I did lose my giant sequoia tree over the winter, but that’s no surprise. It had been in steady but slow decline for 2 years.

persimmons and paw paws are still dormant but everything else is growing well. pears , apples, and serviceberry will all bloom soon together this year which is weird. apricots, currants, and honeyberries are all bloomed and covered with bumbles today. again my autumn olives were killed to the snow line. until 2 springs ago they were 10ft trees. now they just keep dying to the snow line despite the winters barely getting to -20f. nurseries say they are z3 hardy. i say bull. they cant even handle z4b. its too bad as i really like the fruit. my goumi isnt hardy either but its hardier than the a.o despite it being rated z5 hardy.

I would of never guessed that about A.O.. That’s wild. I have never had any winter die-back on goumis. I am currently trying to root a couple senjed varieties, but maybe it’s an exercise in futility based on your winter experience. It’s always so hard to know because there are so few of us trying this weird stuff in our cold zones, and because nurseries have a vested interest in peddling false positives.

This thread is always a reminder to be thankful for our weather in the west. Crazy that you guys are still getting frosts.

Looks like classic late spring weather for the next couple weeks. Mid 60s to low 80s, maybe some showers but I’m not getting my hopes up. Tomatoes and figs are growing really well now. And my plums set a good crop for the first time this year, pretty excited about that.

Back into the mid 60s and sun after over an inch of rain. Next couple of days will be near 80°.

Seems hot for France.

We had 90F here this afternoon. Dewpoint wasn’t that high and there was a nice breeze. Could use rain.

low 60’s with a nice light soaking rain. sierra pear was 1st to bloom over serviceberry, apples, plums and s. cherries. weird.

forecast is 70s/80s days, 50s nights, rain maybe tomorrow and Friday. if it rains at all I’ll be really happy we need it and I’m tired of watering so early

Sounds nice. I assume we get some more days in the 60Fs before summer locks in. This heat will get old quick. Things are turning crusty around here.

90F again and today is more humid. July weather in May. Cold front tonite should “cool” us back to 80F and 50Fs at night which will be nice.

low 60’s and 1 upper 50’s the rest of the week with showers every day. my pears, serviceberry, black ice plum and cj cherry are all popping today. that rain is making this move along quickly. my different colored lilac traded to me from someone on here will bloom for the 1st time. he didnt specify what different color its supposed to be so it will be a suprise.

Day 6 of doom and gloom weather. We are all feeling it. The forecasts have been all over the place by the hour and entirely wrong. Anyone else noticing weather forecasting this year has been an abomination?

They forecast 88 for yest, we got 79. Can’t trust this.

yes since the weather service and people studying weather patterns and climate change and a lot of the scientists were laid off it’s gotten bad. there’s a trickle down effect to the local weather forecast as they rely on all that data to do their own local work too.

plus in general the weather will get more unpredictable now every year, we should be hiring more people to do that science really, to keep up

we had a good soaking rain yesterday and a bit more later this week but I’m not sure which day it’ll happen. i doubt the cool nights, none have been as predicted for months now

if it says one number for the night temp i can usually add 5F and it’s closer to correct. rain gets forecasted and we usually get nothing. was nice to see a high % on it yesterday and i could feel it in my bones coming on.
