Hybrid Persimmons Future Look Great

I cannot slow them down in pots or in-ground. They grow immensely with vigor that’s outstanding. I think they’re the best thing I’ve come across.

I don’t like southern anymore. I think @ramv those chromosomal differences are not working all the time. That’s pure conjecture.

@mamuang – You’re not far from me, so our climates are similar and your issue is relevant to me. Could the answer be as simple as immaturity?

I planted a small (2-yr old?) Kassandra in 2017, so this is the 6th season in the ground here and, I suppose, 8th season since the grafting. Yet this is the first season that the tree held fruit. It set a lot of fruit, then dropped roughly 80% of it. But there are still plenty of fruits, probably >200.

FWIW, I fertilize lightly – a few handfuls of 10-10-10 in the spring plus some occasional dolomitic limestone or wood ash. I also water lightly – not al all unless there’s a very prolonged period without rain.

The tree itself is healthy and robust, roughly 12’ high.

My experience with IKKJ is quite similar.

Nikita!s Gift is notorious for fruit dropping. It was planted in 2015, not that young.

This year, my small potted 3 year old Prok sets 25 fruit and JT-02 sets11.

OK, I didn’t know the story on NG. The way you mentioned other factors, it seemed you were faulting yourself. Among hybrids, I have only Kassandra and JT-02.

Like you, I had Prok set a good crop within a few years. My JT-02 is young (grafted to DV rootstock last year) so I removed any fruit myself this year.

I thought my 2nd year JT -02 would aborted the fruit on its own so I did not do anything to remove them. Well, all fruit stay on the tiny tree!! Probably will set the tree back. Whatever it is, it is. I am about to have enough of persimmon pickiness

I learned a new medical term today. “Persimmon pickiness” is that condition that occurs when the persimmon trees produce more fruit than the tree owner can possibly pick. It is characterized by feelings of quiet anticipation, eager lip smacking, and occasional counting chicks before the eggs have hatched. With a bit of luck, reality comes within striking distance of the fantasy. Wish you luck with your persimmons mamuang!

I forgot about some scions until a couple weeks ago. They still took great. This one is Gwang Yang x Rosseyanka F2 male.

I hope to one day cross the flowers with a PCNA male.

How did these turn out? Fall 2022 is right around the corner!!!

Ha! I was actually pretty close with that guess. I’ve got one male and four females that survived from that batch. All of them flowered this year, but none of the females held onto their fruit. It looks like they’ll need one more year before I get to try them.

Any updates on these, Andrew? So excited for you and I’m very curious on how these turn out!

Wow! That’s a pretty good female to male ratio. Are they still in pots?

They are all still holding. Here is a picture of the same 2 I posted previously. They’ve since grown to about 2 inches in diameter with another couple months to go! At this point they are smaller than my PCNA varieties and Nishimura Wase, but they are certainly larger than some Asian varieties like Miss Kim.

Here they were back on July 6th.

I am mainly interested in getting measurements on these. I don’t think anyone has posted pictures of ripe JT-02 fruit they grew themselves next to a ruler, and weighed on a scale. I really want to see how these compare to commonly cultivated varieties.

That’s a great point, especially as someone here recently compared the fruit on JT-02 to a muscadine grape. I don’t think that was an informed opinion.

I am also very interested in the seeds that could be inside these fruit. Some of them could have really good potential.

Agree that Comparing JT-02 fruit size to a muscadine grape was really ill-informed.
Even my potted JT-02 fruit is larger than Prok and Yates that I have eaten.

Fruit from potted trees tend to be smaller in size than those in ground ones. I can’t wait to see a measurement of Andrew’s JT-02 and any of his hybrid ones.
