They evolved to resemble snake heads to deter predators.
It’s amazing.

Ha, yes, me too !
The Incredible Mr. Limpet!!! I loved that movie.
Did it say anything?
Not a peep, I think he was too depressed.
that was the one with Don Knotts right?
Yup. A strange movie for sure. As a kid it was fun, as an adult it’s a pretty dark show.
It was interesting for back in the day. Cartoons intermixed with a movie, going back and forth.
Green phase later instar Eastern Tiger Swallowtail caterpillar. Eyespots are on the thorax, near the head.
Thank you Larry!
There are lots of photos of their entire life cycle here:
IL847: Yes; and scrolling way down on swincher’s link gets to the brown phase.
Thanks. Interesting! Definitely not identical but the fact the new growth looks unaffected makes it totally possible that its a deficiency, also given the amount of rain we’ve had which has washed things out.
Was mostly asking because I may use that branch for scionwood eventually and dont want to use diseased wood. Sounds like its unlikely to be an issue
Of course I pickled what is turning out to be the hottest summer on record here to try growing a extremely marginal fruit tree like sweet cherry.
My trees are struggling I’d say. Insect damage seems to be waning as I am not seeing more leaf damage than already done…probably because there is no new, tender growth for them.
What I am getting is yellowing leaves. If one 4 hour period of 1.82" of rain does this then these trees stand no chance as they are (on the existing rootstock at least). I’m more thinking it’s the extreme heat and sunshine burning through the leaves.
It’s a bit confusing as I read yellowing leaves can mean too much water or too little water.
Or it could be Chlorosis from nutrient uptake issues.
I wish it would just spell out on the affected leaf what is causing it.
Well I can wish right?
@danzeb
The one I circled is a yellow jacket, others are honeybees .
What is it they are attracted to , something sweet ? Water ?
Apple juice. I just wanted to attract the yellowjackets. Didn’t expect to see all those honey bees so I thought I might be wrong… I did see some fighting. Now I can see the difference.
I once visited Yates Cider Mill. Tried to enjoy some cider on the property, but there was yellow jackets everywhere and they were even diving into the cups. Never ever seen it that bad except there.
