List of hybrid persimmon species available in USA

I usually use Growing Degree Unit (GDU) Calculator | Pioneer® Seeds. I find Weathersparks is not that accurate for my location due to a large amount of microclimates in the immediate area. I am hoping to keep track of the GDU’s myself this summer and compare to Pioneers numbers.

fine, plenty of data that would be ‘central’ to all.

Ok, here’s tonight’s version. Perhaps some of you can provide information for the items marked with question marks?

My climate is very similar to yours. What kaki hybrid persimmons do you consider 100% hardy to our climate that you grow personally. Those will be ones i’m interested in.

JT-02 so far is a solid Z5. Survived to at least -24 to -26 F for a 2 nights. Died at -33F in 2019 Polar Vortex. @clarkinks

@Lucky_P would you be the lower middle of the country person that watches bloom and harvesting periods? Which hybrid-cultivars do you have currently? Tony & I will help you get the rest.

Tony has a bit more tame zone 5b than me:

Aledo, IL. is going to be the truest zone 5b about anyone come up with.
I’ve got a 24-hour temperature weather station now that’s more accurate than this and am keeping my data.

How is taste and size? Nikitas gift is pretty large but not truly hardy to my zone.

@Barkslip,
I’m in 6b, just about 20 miles north of the current dividing line between 6b and 7a.
Right now I have Rosseyanka, JT-02, NB-21, Casandra, David’s Kandy Korn, and one of the F2 Rosseyanka males from Cliff, but IDK which one.
Have tried grafting Nikita’s Gift on about 4 different occasions… for whatever reason… it just will not ‘take’ for me. Scionwood in the past has had those troubling ‘black streaks’ in it… though I think scions @cousinfloyd sent me last year were clean - but still no takes.

Thanks, you’re in charge now. :smiley:

As I start to get more trees in ground, I’ll be happy to include my data in the mix too. Similarly to lucky, I’m solidly on 6b but probably edging towards 7a except on the years Canada sends us an extra blast of cold.

I’ll begin taking notes as well on temperature.

@Barkslip is there a post you could refer me to on your weather station, or does anyone else have a recommendation for getting accurate data specific to my location?

Lucky, my Nikita’s Gift needs a prune. I’ll send you some clean wood to try again if you want. PM me if you do.

JT-02 similar looking to a small Kaki fruit around 3 inches. Tasted great and that is why I got 15 trees going into their 3rd leaf and all got their graft unions buried 6 inches below ground for insurance of resprout just incase the Polar Vortex visit again with-33F 20 to 30 years from now. @clarkinks

Ok thank you very much for the information it sounds like a good choice. One last question does it have seeds? Does not matter a lot to me but my suspicion is that it does and they are fertile.

Only if you have a male American or a male Asian persimmon on your property. The seeds will be new hybrids.

I believe there are two main concerns with location:

  • cold hardiness
  • harvest season

In the chart I’m constructing for you folks, I think only one column is needed for cold hardiness – not multiple columns per location.

For harvest seasons, I tend to agree with Ryan and Stan that only one column is needed, and I leave it to all of you to decide (now or later) what the season is for each cultivar.

Is this acceptable?

@Richard

Think the way everyone does it is they say the variety is zone 5 hardy so it ripens in november in zone 5. In this way if you put the coldest climate it gives me an idea in zone 6 im going to be 2 weeks to a month ahead. Zone 7 will be 2 weeks to a month ahead of me. Lucky and south is necessary whereas I & Tony need to grow a lot of this stuff in pots. So, my data or Tony’s is there is all…

Lucky has the estate to do this and the expertise. If @Fusion_power or @Stan had the chance to grow every one of these… then it all still stays ‘relative’. We want to see when they bloom/which ones are lurking to be grown only at Stan’s maybe because he (I’m guessing) might not have issues with Spring frosts like the rest of each of us… so, I’m trying to find somewhere that will keep these things alive and Lucky’s place should do…

I’m here for the breeding and that’s Tony’s here for, too. And to eat from potted trees and save seeds… and to make new-ones that are as good as Gora Roman Kosh for us.

Everyone knows I’m gonna plant row after row and find out what happens. Tony is more regimented in his spacing’s. This is gonna be great. I’m read to begin every day.

Thank you Clark and Dax! What I’m reading is that in addition to columns for cold-hardiness and harvest, a column for bloom season/date is needed. In fact you’ll need it not only due to early spring freezes but also for pairing males & females.

@EliindaUP

Eli , can you help with this project? You have the killer (literally) climate zone and perhaps the space to trial a number of trees. If grafting is not your thing then I’m sure we can figure out how to send you trees.

If you are interested then please discuss with others which cultivars might be important to test.
