How are Nadias ripening for folks this year? Mine are just starting to ripen now, still a bit too early but good eating. I had a very large crop but the first the bugs and then the birds made a dent in it so I just have a normal size crop on it now. The fruits turn red way before they are ripe and the birds then have what seems like a whole month to pick away at them. I didn’t get a really exceptional taste off of them last year so it had better pony up this year or its out! They do have a nice bit of cherry in the background but otherwise have not been super flavorful.
In terms of the timing mine look all ripe from the bottom (dark red) but when I pick they are still not dark red on the top. Last year I picked some all dark red and getting a bit too soft, those were over the hill. The best ones were just turning all red, soft but not too soft on the tops.
It’s a second rate fruit again this yr. As Scott says they aren’t good past a certain ripeness. Not that good at peak. Mine will be grafted to something better. That gives me lots of choices.
I tasted three today. The soft dark purple one I immediately tasted cherry then the skins sourness overwhelmed it to a plum. The other two were not as ripe and were sour. Plenty of plums left yet to taste but they have to get ripe. They are turning red now.
Last Year I removed all Japanese plums , so I do not have any pollinators near by. I placed 1 small Santa Rosa in 5 gallons container next to Nadia . It’s very cold weather during their blooming time, no bees around , I am not sure whether both Santa Rosa and Nadia sharing their pollen or not . I might try one year completely no pollinators at all and let’s see what happen . Hopefully Nadia has little self fertile for itself .
Something with no name very little of fruits it’s good but grows really fast and take too much room. I don’t like the taste of Methley plum also. I relocated them to other property . Replaced with Saijo persimmon . I might replace 1 Seneca EP soon. it’s fruits extremely good but so little of fruits every year. So I plant Catalina Plum next to Nadia. Sometimes My wife gets mad with me because just planting and removing and spend more money for plants. Hihi. @murky. Nadia still early to harvest in my area . I still have a lot more but waiting a couple more weeks . Now my Emerald Beaut plum changing color. So excited.
I see. I generally don’t remove established trees unless they are unhealthy. They make a great head start for grafting something else that will fruit sooner than a purchased tree.
My Nadia seem to almost be ripe. AU Producer, Shiro, and one of my pluots, maybe Splash all seem to be ripening about the same time or a little sooner.
Saijo sounds like a great choice. I bought one since I couldn’t get grafts to take for some reason. So hopefully I’ll get some fruit in a couple of years. I’ve successfully grafted a few other persimmons.
@murky. Do you have Sweet Treat . Some fruit growers said its fruits quality are not very good. So I trimmed down the branches almost replace it with Beauty plum. ( planted beauty plum next to Sweet Treat ) now after tasting I found out it’s fruit quality very good to me. I am so happy my sweet treat still there hopefully it will have a lot of fruits next coming years . Maybe different location and weather fruit quality comes out difference. Below picture of my Sweet Treat and Beaut plum next to it .
Not much information about Catalina plum in Pacific Northwest yet . I like to do the test. Is it self fertile and good flavor plum ? Sound really good to me. Thank you Stan.
I don’t know about self-fertility, I have many plum varieties that grow in close proximity to each other. The flavor is good, nice sugar-acid balance and juicy. I let the fruit to fall into the net, because it’s difficult to tell otherwise whether it’s ripe — it colors early and stays firm even when fully ripe.
I am in zone 6, too. I picked Nadia last yesr around August 12-15. Last yesr we had a wet summer so it tasted watery. We have a bit drier and hotter summer this year but very wet spring. Nadia and many plums did not set or set sparingly.
It was cold and rainy here too, but I was lucky to get some plums, nectarines, peaches, apricots and apples. I have four Korean Giant pears on a graft. The rest of my pear trees didn’t have buds. It rained when I was in full bloom for a couple days but I did get a couple nice days too. It rained hard the last two days and knocked some fruit off the trees. The ground Has only been dry here for maybe a week at a time twice. We have been fighting the mud at work all summer just about. Yet my fruit is still small. My Nadia’s are not much bigger than a quarter. My bigest apples are about two inches.
