Pawpaws 2023

Wow, that is a healthy tree. Look at those thick dark leaves–maybe almost too much N! And no fungus. Nice work.

Hey @disc4tw — interesting fact. I posted a video on a Facebook group of this pawpaw and someone commented they had gotten the same fruit from the same farm and it wasn’t from the Peterson tree line. Meanwhile I finally got to the end of my bag of fruits and found another one just like this one, still thick and carveable and not at all goopy after a week in the fridge, and freestone (I think I’m using that word correctly, see the video — none of the seeds are in a seed-sack). Going to try to email the farmer and figure it out.

Here’s a video of me opening it: IMG_9226 (1)

cc @Blake too. Again, this came from a grab-bag at Robson’s in New Jersey.

That’s awesome. I hope you saved seeds from that one! Sounds like a winner regardless of if you figure out the variety (could also be a seedling?).

I did save seeds! And now I feel pressure to make sure they sprout!!!

I’ve washed the seeds in a diluted bleach solution and have them in wet paper towels in the fridge for right now.

Okay so two questions about locations.

I have a few possible places I can plant some trees at my parents’ place in NH (I live in the city, so my non-container plants are up there). However, the location that caught my eye is a small strip of soil between a rock wall and the cul-de-sac at the base of the house. The reason this caught my eye is because it is where all of the water from our house, and nearby houses, drains to; it’s sort of like an always-damp, sometimes-wet, never-continuously-flowing creekbed with a drain on the far side of it. It is also where some road salt gets deposited, though, I suspect, when the plows come. I could put it in other places around the house, if this seems bad, but based on what I’ve read about pawpaws growing naturally near rivers and so on made me wonder if it could be good. This would get 6-8 hours of sun most of the year.

I also want to plant some pawpaws down by the lake they live near. There is a spot at the end of their beach that all the water from the mountainside drains down to, so it’s always kind of wet and mucky but not swampy, and gets 4-6 hours of sun most of the year. This is not a place I would be cultivating, more rewilding.

I put pictures of both locations on here and would appreciate any feedback from experienced growers. cc @weatherandtrees for newfound content

I’d say salt may be a factor but go for it anyway. I’d plant at an elevation where they won’t be submerged often, roots on a tiny seedling stretch deep to access water.

Also- if ‘rewilding’ is the objective, consider that pawpaw may actually be an introduced species to the area you are planting in, not a native. It’s better than knotweed or other true invasives, but just food for thought.

Appreciate that. I’m not sure if I’m outside of the true native range of pawpaw (how would we even know where it grew during say the MWP) but I should adjust my thinking. and I’ll see if this works for a location, although with the depths of roots I may have other more protected options. Because water is always flowing down the hill, there are lots of places where it is always at least damp a few inches down.

Wow, the GDD calculator for 5b is very depressing re: the ripening tables on Woody’s website. Guess I got to go early and hope.

Pawpaws are just getting going here in eastern Mass. Had this Maria’s Joy last night that was very good with a nice pineapple/banana flavor. It probably could have hung another day, but it fell when I gave the tree a small shake.

Pawpaw harvest was very limited this year to only two Tropical pawpaws.

This small Shenandoah dropped on the ground this morning. I must be very slow, a snail got to it before me!!!

Cantaloupe that could have hung another day or two. Still very good!

That looks like one I’d like to eat!

Is it similar to Shenandoah? Ripens before or after it?

It ripens about a week after Shenandoah. Seems to be on the timeline of Wabash.

I asked Mr. Peterson if Chappell was a superior tasting fruit compared to Susquehanna and his answer was Yes. He said he was extremely impressed with Chappel.

OK trying to determine the various tastes of the various named pawpaw varieties. I know a lot of people’s harvests got frosted out but figured I would try. If anyone has some ripe named varieties I am willing to pay per pound and pay for overnight shipping so I can get them ripe as possible with the shortest shipping time. I really would like to get a taste of Shenandoah, Susquahanna, KSU varieties, Overleese in particular. Having said that I want to try any and all other varieties too. I don’t know if it is too late in the harvest season but thought I would ask. Also I realize not everyone might have every variety so am willing to get some from multiple people so I can get a good collection. Don’t need Mango as that is the one I have actually tasted. I don’t know what people feel is a reasonable price, $5/pound? If that is not reasonable let me know what is. If anybody has some ripening now can send me one of each and please label them so I know what I am tasting. Maybe between a few people with different ones I can get a collection of various types to try. And if some are not ripe yet I can do some multiple shipments. This is going to be the best way to figure out which I want the most. If this post is not appropriate mods can remove this post or request I do so if need be. Message me what you have available and let me know how much and the cost of shipping and I will pay. Ideally people from people who are on here posting than someone never on here to just take my money lol. I have not used the messaging system on here so don’t know if there are any issues with me using that as I heard other say they couldn’t due to not enough post or something like that. If that happens I will post here saying I can’t respond. If my pawpaw peeps can help me out with this I would be ever so grateful. I don’t mind the overnight, or two day shipping costs as I want to get them close to ripe. After all this is an investment in my pawpaw future so worth it lol. Those with more that can send would be ideal. Thanks so much. Don’t mind waiting if things are not quite ripe yet, being ripe to near ripe is more important. I am in Texas near DFW area if that helps with figuring shipping costs. Thanks!
