Persimmons 2024

You are correct. It’s a nice organic operation in California.

Anyone have a picture of a seedling just popping out after losing it’s seed covering?

How many years did it take yours to flower? Mine is about the same size but has set zero flowers.

I find persimmons like to do things on their own terms and on their schedule. A lot of it has to do with the inherent variability in seedling rootstocks. There are pretty wide error bars around the “typical” timelines.

@jxz7245 Sorry to hear you haven’t seen any flowers. I have found Chocolate to be among the fastest to flower and have had them flower the same year as grafted to small 1/4 inch rootstocks. I would be a little concerned that yours might not be a true Chocolate if you haven’t seen flowers yet. Was it from a reliable source? I can send you scion wood if you decide you want to graft onto your tree just to be sure.

I will say that the flowering can be very male heavy, which is good for pollinating other varieties, but I was disappointed this year to realize that almost all of the flowers were male. Even when they were triples, which often have a female flower in the middle, they were male. In the end, I just have one lone persimmon on the tree, even though I had many more set last year. The good news is that the Giboshi near it should be very well pollinated.

Anyone have recommendations for tasty, Zone 6a persimmons that a. won’t get enormous and b. can handle occasional soggy ground?

I got it from Raintree. It’s survived in a slightly colder zone than it should have, with absolutely no dieback… so I’ve been anxious to see if it’s really Chocolate, or something else. I’m pretty sure it’s a kaki.

Stopped by walmart yesterday and checked on my roadside tree Persimmonilla.

Looking good… a little smaller than prok… cant wait to try these again this year.

TNHunter: Those are looking nice. What size would you say those are now?

@Thazo1979 … probably average 1 inch diameter now. They will get a little bigger… but this is a small wild tree… around 8 ft tall and wide. Where it is located it only gets a couple hours of late evening sun… yet it produces a good load of fruit and is delicious.

Picking persimmons high in tree without ladder: is there such a thing as a long handled persimmon picker with cutter blade and basket?

There are blades on some telescopic basket pickers. like this But it is not always easy to cut off a stubborn pear (some seem to have kevlar stems). I’ve never tried it on my persimmons, though I may have to this fall. I’ve seen videotutorials on YouTube for making pickers with two blades forming a V from a PET bottle and a carpet cutter blades.

There are long reach pruners that prune and hold the stem. Probably not good for individual persimmons but can cut the stem they are attached to.

The telescoping one from ARS is great. I mostly got it for collecting scion wood from the ground.

I just found this telescoping picking basket with cutter blade:Fruit Picker Tool | Telescoping Fruit Picker by Garrett Wade

Cool. But how do you get that between the persimmon and the branch? It seems like that would be good for delicate, long-stemmed fruit. Or tip bearers and you cut the branch stem.

A good angle and lots of space around? My Aquacraft picker has an adjustable joint just below the basket. No pruners though…

I have a couple of these which I like for things that are amenable to a gentle to moderate tug. No sharp edges. Fruit Picker - Lee Valley Tools

But tugging on kaki results in broken branches if they are firm or squished fruit if they are soft.

The telescoping cut and hold pruners are good if you are taking some branch with it, rather than just tugging until it breaks.

Here are some Asian persimmon seedlings just coming up.

I agree- it’s hard enough to cut the short stemmed kaki off a tree with hand pruners standing on the ground.
