I regularly get seeds in my Nikita’s gift. But they are pollinated by PVNA kaki. Maybe not ideal for cold hardiness.
Not mine and just from the Asian market nearby, but these Nishimura Wase (coffee cake) are so good. I let them just start to soften and they are tremendously rich with a bit of spice in the flavor.
My Giboshi is always fully pollinated and is another tasty PVNA. I also have a young Zenji Maru that is still too young to fruit, but I’m looking forward to tasting it and seeing how it compares. I guess if you hate seeds you won’t want to grow PVNA persimmons, but I’ll take the seeds as long as it comes with all this flavor.
Whoot! Can’t wait to hear your tasting review.
Chuchupaka is much further along than any hybrid here
Nikita’s gift is usually late - around early November.
By comparison this is where the common pcna persimmon Jiro is
Had another Kassandra. It split a little from all the rain we got after two completely dry months, but flavor was still there. I’m really preferring the somewhat firmer texture Kassandra has.
This is Saijo, picked today from a potted tree. I picked it because of the small split at the top. I can see orange flesh, so despite the greenish-orange skin I think that it is nearly ripe.
Last year I picked a single nearly ripe fruit from the same very young tree in early November. It ripened indoors in 5 days. This one appears roughly the same in late September. That’s great news.
FWIW, there are more un-cracked fruits on the tree, showing some color. I also have some color on Kasandra, JT-02, and Giboshi. I’ve been picking the Americans H63A and Barbra’s Blush for a few days. Dollywood is close behind.
First year fruiting Kassandra.
Held up to potted Nakita’s Gift on the right.
Nakita’s humble beginnings grafted to tiny seedling in 2021.
Same Kassandra and 100-46.
Kassandra is probably my favorite hybrid. Has more flavor than other hybrids imo most others taste sweet but kind of watery. Very ornamental as well.
They look great. Does anyone know average weight for Kassandra?
From all the DV rootstock planted this spring this one really impressed me how well branched it growth, I’m loving it’s shape. Should I keep it growing and see what happens without actually grafting it?
Is Saijo the best?
Taste is very subjective. It has a very good reputation.
It’s the best astringent asian IMO. Everyone has different taste, but if you search the forum there is nothing but high praise for it.
Tana mentioned above Saijo was an upright growing form. I’m wondering if it would be a ok candidate to graft on my Jiro? Would pollination cause problems?
It is pretty upright and a quick grower. If you graft it onto Jiro, you may need to keep it in check, but should be ok. Pollination is not a issue, both are self pollinating with no male flowers.
Thanks!
Not “self-pollinating” exactly. That would require male flowers (or at least male parts) and would produce viable seeds – “my male flower parts fertilize my female flower parts.” That contrasts with the more common “my male flower parts fertilize your female flower parts.”
Like most persimmons (and figs), Saijo and Jiro are parthenocarpic, so they may produce fruit without pollination and without seeds. No pollination is required.
I have grafted Tone Wase on D. Lotus. It grew nicely, healthy leaves and making a good impression, but it is only about 2 feet tall. Shall I plant it in ground now, before the winter comes? Zone 7b. Or shall await until spring?
And shall I keep the graft above ground? Tone Wase seems quite cold hardy, not sure it would have an advantage to keep the graft above the ground level?
