Persimmons 2024

Nikita’s Gift

My one and only Morris Burton dropped to the ground (fully ripened). I did not detect any astringency.

Yates is tasty. I had so many so I slightly squished them and put them in my dehydrator for about 10 hours. They looked like typical hoshigaki persimmons (minus sugar bloom) but did not taste as good.

I need to look for Hachiya to make good hoshigaki.

Good info. How old was the tree?

My three IKKJ survived two nights at -5 to -7 F in Feb 2023, but all 1-2 year old wood was killed. Rebuilding has been slow. There was no fruit last year and there’s roughly 6-8 fruits this year, compared with 80-100 per tree in the two prior years.

It was very small. Maybe a couple of years old.

One of the things that made mine so susceptible to the cold is that we don’t have cold like that often. They were cruising along with our regular winter temps of 30-60° maybe dipping down to 23-25°overnight and then a week of - 4-+10° and then back up to 40-70° for our late February temps. A few of them never knew what hit them…… :flushed:

Good idea Katy, to dehydrate for storage. How long does it take to for astringency to go away? Usually they lose it when they soften, but I notice you are drying them before they soften. Does the process remove astringency?

Yes. Occasionally I may notice a tinge left but it is not often seen and is not an averse taste at all when dried. Hard to explain but I think if you didn’t know astringency you wouldn’t notice it. Everyone I know loves the dried persimmons even if they don’t know or care for persimmons themselves.

Went fishing this morning… beautiful fall day… but not much luck.

This lake has several persimmon trees growing right out over the water.

With no shortage of water… they made some good sized fruit.

Nice fruits! Good to see progress in finding varieties that will ripen early here! I have two year old grafts from you Ram that still look good so hopefully next year they can flower. I just picked my earliest Zima khurma, bright orange and soft. Will try it later today. Have 7 more turning

Thanks Tony. I will say I expected the Gora Roman Kosh to be bigger. They didn’t look any bigger than a lot of the other hybrids and I thought they were in the 150-200 gram range. But I think he’s had drought like I many of us so maybe that kept fruit size lower.

When does your Nikita’s Gift ripen? Mine has a similar color in zone 6b, though it might be a tad lighter.

It ripens early to mid November here.

I like that means of supporting the young tree without overconstraining it.

My problem with similar caging, is that I usually don’t secure the cage very well In part due to laziness, but also because I like to be able to get inside (and don’t have the weed barrier, usually just wood chip mulch).

I worry that the cage itself will get moved and then the restraints will move the tree. Still this is better than tying it.

This is how I deal with the two problems of (1) keeping the cage secure and (2) allowing for inside access:

A well pollinated Giboshi. Yummy PVNA goodness.

Speaking of Giboshi, a couple days ago I come across something, I noticed that a branch on the left side of my tree the leaves ware wilting and after a closer inspection I noticed that something took the bark around a couple of the branches showing below.

Not knowing who ware the culprits and yesterday while pruning some branches on a tree in the front yard I noticed an European hornet taking the bark off one branch I then thought about my persimmon tree. Could this be the culprit?
