Persimmons 2024

Here’s a pic from upstate NY zone 5 a/b today. This is my first time to have a named cultivar bear fruit (haven’t dared to taste yet). I have a seedling persimmon that bears tiny, seedy fruits, but is behind this one in terms of ripening. My location had a longer season this go-around. Growing season usually is done by the first full week of September, but we’ve gotten some extra weeks this year. The pictured H-118 was grafted on to an established seedling without any expectation of success, but has done well. Also have purchased pre-grafted 100-46, Juhl, Garretson, Valeene Beauty, Mohler that survived last winter – but as persimmons are very slow growing in this cool, short summer area, it’ll be a few more years before I see much from those.

“Morris Burton” and ¨Lena¨ (aka ¨Mitchellena¨) are two that are outside of the EG genetic line – though both have descendants via pairings with EG.

Finally starting to ripen up but it looks like the birds and critters have gotten to all of them before they ripen. Having same issues with my grapes as well. The crows have cleaned me out. I got to taste 1 and it was amazing  I’ll make sure to bag some next year before they start to ripen. A lot of the raccoons and squirrels have started to pick mine as soon as they turned colors. The tree was loaded about 2 weeks ago.

It’s a seedling from open pollination. So we can’t really know.

Are there any American varieties that produce quality fruit, make at least some male or hermaphroditic flowers, and aren’t related to Early Golden?

I’m thinking we have one that might be. Fruit is similar flavor wise to EG, but a dryer texture and a more squat shape. I’m not aware of any male persimmon tree anywhere around at all and they all are thoroughly pollinated.

Here’s some with a Elmo on the left side of the pile.

Both Mohler and Yates are EG free. Prok is Pipher x EG or wild male. As I know John Gordon don’t mention anywhere where he get the seeds of Pipher but they could be collected in Geneva where EG and Garretson were planted as pollen source. Let me know if you want info about other unrelated cultivars.

What’s the variety

Yes, right

@zendog … I was having a hard time describing the taste of 100-46 lemans delight… we tried two nice ripe fruits of 100-46 at the Englands Orchard tour. Very nice large fruit nice smooth jam like texture… and a big mouth full of delicious.

Apricot/citrus … is a good way to describe it.

H118… we got to try one of those… and it tasted very similar to 100-46 to me and my wife.

We tried several other persimmons… mostly unnamed crosses… and we just kept looking at each other and agreeing that these all taste very similar to 100-46.

That was a little disappointing…

I was much more interested in finding the persimmons that include a hint of brown sugar, butterscotch, vanilla, caramel type flavors. Had no luck at that.

I never found a Prok, Mohler, Juhl tree in the orchard there… he may have had them… but it was not easy to find the varieties you wanted to find.

Journey hybrid is supposed to have taste of vanilla… which I love. I grafted Journey here this spring. I could not locate Journey at Englands either.

I’ve never seen it that red before :exploding_head:

In warm years, the fruits are even redder, even slightly purple, up to 30 Brix

@TNHunter Been searching for those varieties for years now. All the named varieties are nothing but EG crosses and only have that apricoty flavor. I’ve tasted some wilds with a great caramel flavor. I’m thinking about creating a frankentree of the best wilds I can find. They may not be as big and have more seeds, but some of them have fantastic taste (not like EG taste). Your vanilla tree may be of interest.

@Robert … sadly the little tree that had a wonderful vanilla aftertaste last year… does not this year.

This is the 4th year I have harvested from it… and so far only last year it had that nice vanilla flavor.

My sisters tree rich tooie had a very rich caramel like aftertaste the first two years I harvested it… but it was not there last year.

I have not tried one yet this year… but will soon.

Do you still have the pics of them cut open? Would like to see the size to seed ratio on them. Often if you let them wrinkle a little the caramel flavor comes out more.
