Which one is your favorite?

Haven’t heard anything about PP. Would you elaborate?

JT-02 is my favorite followed by PP.

PA Precocious is a tree that I got by accident. I purchased the tree from Burnt Ridge as Miss Kim, but it froze to the graft the first winter. I had planned to graft another variety to the rootstock but didn’t get it done. It started producing fruit a couple years ago and I liked it so well that I decided to keep it and name it. @ramv called someone at Burnt Ridge to enquire what seedlings they use in their grafting. He was told that they use early golden seedlings so I’m assuming that’s what this is.

JT-02 is the only one not 100% America, right? I assume that it is milder tasting than the others. Is that what you like?

Yes, JT-02 is the only hybrid.

I haven’t checked the bricks on any of them, but JT-02 seems substantially sweeter to me. I wouldn’t necessarily have described the flavor as milder. It definitely has more of a Japanese persimmon flavor profile then any of the americans. 100-46 is my least favorite one but it may be because of where it’s planted. The others are in full sunlight while 100-46 is significantly shaded. PP has a richer flavor then Prok. Prok tends to be a little more bland in my opinion.

Well, here’s an interim result from an on-going experiment.

in 2022, I planted Giboshi here in Z7A coastal RI. I protected the tree for two winters, so it survived without damage despite -7 F lows. But now it is 10’ tall and I will see how it does on its own.

Today I picked the tree – its first crop. I’ll ripen 2 fruits on the counter and try to make hoshigaki with the rest.

Fingers crossed that this is not my one and only crop from this tree. Hopefully future winters are mild and/or Giboshi proves tough.

Those look great. Any idea of overage weight?

I think mine averaged around 100grams, maybe a bit more, but I’m hoping they get a bit bigger as the tree matures.

I didn’t know, so I weighed them. The ten fruits totaled 1370 grams. So 137 g average.

I’m in eastern Canada, Zone 5b/6a depending on the year, about 135-150 frost free days annually. Anyone have any suggestions for the best varieties for me to look into?

The supplier I usually order fruit trees from is going to offer Prok, Yates, and some Claypool cultivars (but they haven’t said which yet) in 2025. Could these be the best options for my situation? Are there any others that would may be better? I only have space for 2-3 persimmon trees, so I’d like to take the time to figure out the best option for my situation before planting anything.

Ichi Ki Kei Jiro and Rojo Brillante - my first year with container grown persimmons in Utah zone 6a.

The Rojo came off the tree 1/2 green but ripened up nicely in a bag with an apple.

Those look great. Did you prefer one over the other?

A mix of persimmons from the other weekend. Timothy Lane of Ockoo Farm came by and shared the Bliznetsnaja and Saijo X F fruits.

When’s the best time to dig persimmon rootstocks?

Rojo tasted more unique but not strongly different like an American persimmon like Meader.

Is this the Cardinal from Cliff England or from OGW (i.e., jo-choo). If OGW, it should be non-astringent. Assuming so, I’m very interested in when it ripens relative to other persimmons especially others Kakis. Thx.

I had 800, 150, and 750 fruits respectively the past 3 years from Saiju.
But this year only 10 cause of this guy (and a few squirrels):

Finally caught him in a HaveAHeart trap and released him far away.
He/She was very cute and docile, compared to some mean groundhogs i’ve caught in it.

I been meaning to save seeds of Saiju as 3 years ago i had a few. but couldn’t find any in the 750 fruit last year (i checked each one).
I luckily found 1 seed in one of the 10 fruits this year.
So I have 2 American persimmon (100-46, Prok) but they are unlikely to pollinate since they are female and even if they had male flowers that requires ‘embryo rescue’ so basically impossible, so what most likely pollinated my Saiju? a couple rare male flowers showing up on Saiju (or do female trees like that 100% always have female flowers, not even a couple stragglers)? a male or bisexual/hermaphrodite asian persimmon nearby (seems unlikely, not many persimmon growers here in the suburbs where houses are a bit spaced out by half an acre each but i guess this would be the only likely option?).

I’m not the biggest fan of non astringents, so I let them all sit on the counter to get soft like that. The consistency will turn to an astringent and can be more easily used for cooking.

@SMC_zone6@jrd51 … that looks very similar to the pictures of Cardinal persimmon on the OGW site.

They say it ripens 2-3 weeks before other Asian persimmons. Hardy to 0F, zone 7.

I started one this spring.

I was hoping it would ripen earlier than my IKKJiro… and possibly taste a little different.

@SMC_zone6 are you growing yours in a container ?

Any details you could provide on taste or ripening time compared to IKKJ would be appreciated.

Someone I met yesterday had a fruit already from OGW when they received it and grew out the fruit. I believe they said it tasted like a regular Fuyu/jiro.

Personally I don’t see the point of more pcna varieties- they all taste the same.
