Jury is still out for my Dar Sofiyivky… first fruit drop, couple are still hanging. White stuff is caolin overspray.

Anyone with Suruga can confirm this fruit is Suruga?

Google says fruit is 2.5 to 3”, but this is already slightly over 3”…

@snarfing both are true - we can’t get persimmon shipped into CA due to the restrictions, but we can get many varieties from Planting Justice or Fruitwood Nursery here. Really Good Plants as mentioned in another thread is also excellent and has many Russian cultivars too.

That’s what I suspected. Some guy on Etsy had this. I was looking for vaniglia. My grafts didn’t take last year.

I enjoyed the success of my first bark grafts so much I decided to try a bud graft with Early Jewell.

Another persimmon leaf question. The leaves on just one dv persimmon plant (no graft) in a 5 gallon bucket (with drainage holes) have black on the edges. New leaves come it looking good and then the edges get black. There is another dv in the same type bucket a few feet away that is growing great without this problem. Any ideas what is wrong (disease? insects? something I did?) and what I could do to help the tree?

Did you spray with anything?

My giant fuyu had this from heat + neem oil. My other trees’ new growth are not as sensitive to neem oil.

It has not been sprayed.

The bottom leaves look like they’re showing mouse ear disease. I find some varieties (and each seedling is in effect a separate variety) are more prone to it than others. Usually it is noted as a nickel deficiency. I would suggest a good balanced fertilizer with micros that include nickel or just a nickel supplement if you want.

When one of my potted trees kept having the issue it still grew okay and even fruited, so not a terrible issue for me. It has gone away after I repotted the tree to a larger container with fresh media and a well balanced granular fertilizer.

It could also be bugs or something else, but that’s what I think I’m seeing from the picture.

Wild persimmon fruit forming. Looks like it will be a bumper year for wild persimmons (it always is a bumper year for persimmons ).

Does anyone know if the “Chocolate” persimmon sold by One Green is actually “Tsuru Noko”?

In yalls experience, if a side branch graft grows 6-8” and wood hardens, is that something that will typically survive next year and grow?

I noticed some small (4”) branches grown (non graft) last year don’t grow the current year (but are still alive).

i’d say typically yes but be aware that persimmons tend to shed lower / shaded branches. So last year’s healthy branch could just dry up and eventually fall off.

I’ve got a few JT-02 still hanging on! Still plenty of time for them to drop, but fingers crossed I have at least a few to sample in the fall!

Another date check . . . . My goumis are starting to ripen, enough so I have to put up the bird netting.

As this is nominally the Persimmon thread, I’ll also mention that most of my persimmon trees are loaded. The only exceptions are a couple ofd potted trees that probably got stressed last year. Right now I’m most excited that Taishu is carrying a lot of fruit, both on a potted tree and on some small branches grafted last year. So far we haven’t seen a major drop; no doubt we’ll lose some of the current crop . . . .
