That will die from the lowest damage up. Is it grafted just above the snow line? If so, there is a good chance it will sprout above the graft. Otherwise, just plan on grafting to something you want.
Just curious was it an American and Asian or a hybrid? Doubtful, but I wonder if one type of bark tastes more delicious than the other since American bark looks very different than Asian bark.
It is, though I may graft something new Iâd prefer on top of the rootstock anyway, given that Iâm basically starting over. I did take lots of cuttings and bought some American rootstock.
Itâs a hybrid above the graft â Davidâs Kandy.
Yep. Thatâs the one.
As an update to this method-
Works great for persimmons, very easy to germinate and separate the seedlings. Many develop a branch root system due to high oxygen levels of the root zone. They actually have a pleasant, rose-like smell to them too.
DO NOT DO THIS FOR PAWPAW SEEDS. THEY SMELL LIKE PUTRID FISH OR ROTTEN POTATOES. I donât really know why, but I guess there is some pulp left in a small chamber of the seeds that gets rotten. Though the seeds were clean and actually smelled pretty good at first, they reeked in a few days. I bisected a few seeds to check for rot, but the insides look healthy, white and firm. None float, or have mold, but they have a slimy yeast scoby that grows on the hole of the seed, just on the surface. Resanitizing with a bleach solution had no effect. 0/10 donât reccomend.
My JT02/Mikkusu is out more than my other persimmons by quite a bit. Some are still closed tight, others showing a little green.
Check those blossoms out.
In year 2 .. both Prok and JT02 bloomed and set fruit.. but eventually dropped it.
In year 3 last year⌠Both grew very well.. but did not bloom at all.
Glad to see JT02 blooming this year. I bet they both set and ripen fruit this year. Hope so anyway.

Very sorry for the late response!
Thanks for posting about this farm âMars Organic farmâ, the farm is about four hours away from me but I would like to visit someday!
It looks like they have the most popular varieties!
As per your question, I donât remember exactly the percentage of american persimmon flavor on NG and Kasandra but is very significant compared to any kaki which makes them different on that aspect and a top tier on my opinion.
Iâm now getting concerned that JT-02 might not be as an amazing tree to grow here, with it waking up early.
They should wake up according to your climate, just because they wake up early on another zone doesnât meant that they will wake up at the same time every where.
Mine still dormant last time I checked on zone 8a
This is a serious question that deserves more investigation. Iâve had Kasandra and JT-02, both supposedly hardy to -15 F or lower, growing here for years. My lowest temps have been around -5 to -7 F. Zero to -3 has happened a bunch of times too. IKKJ was nearly killed at -7 F; all 1-2 year old wood was killed. Kasandra was untouched. JT-02 showed damage to the 6" (more or less) near the tips â that last burst of growth that hits in late summer.
I donât think that JT-02 was necessarily damaged by the absolute low temps. My inference is that JT-02 begins to emerge from dormancy sooner than the others. From visual observation, buds do seem to swell sooner on JT-02. Not a lot sooner but a few days to a week.
If this inference is correct, JT-02 wasnât damaged here by the absolute low temps (e.g., -7 F). Rather it was damaged by sub-freezing temps (e.g., 20-30 F) coming after warmish days that had pushed the tree out of dormancy.
Thatâs whatâs concerning to me. We get late freezes here all the time in late April with sometimes into May.
Everything is running at least two weeks ahead of last year, so this stage of development would ânormallyâ be mid April, if there is such a thing as normal anymore. Maru is showing only a hint of bud swell. The kaki persimmons are usually one of the last things to wake up here. I have an American persimmon rootstock that is at the same stage as Zima Khurma. Iâll have to check the local wild persimmon for comparison.
Edit: the wild persimmon trees behind my yard are also just now starting to push buds.
That is my Prok today. Glad to see blossoms this year.
My H63A is out enough that I can see small blossoms on it too.
JT02, Prok and H63A have the most growth out now.
Nakitas Gift and Journey hybrid are my persimmons with the least growth now. NG has swolen green buds.. Journey hybrid has just a little bud swell starting.
Best I remember Journey hybrid⌠has proven to be more cold hardy than JT02⌠and looks like it is quite a bit later to come out in the spring.
Hope my Journey fruits this year.

Here is a picture of my JT-02 that I took yesterday, just to compare the difference between zones.
As you can see the buds are just breaking dormancy and started getting swollen.
Anyone have any recommendations on where to get an IKKJ for next spring? Seems like not a lot of places sell it. So curious about if anyone really liked where they got theirs from.
Iâve gotten my best persimmon trees from Just Fruits and Exotics. They are expensive but you get what you pay for. My only caveats would be (1) be prepared to receive a tree that is already leafed out and growing / blossoming; (2) spray the tree when you receive it to kill any bugs. Iâm pretty sure that one ion mine came with persimmon psyllids.
I checked them out and it doesnât look like they have IKKJ at least not currently listed
