Clearly those are great pears on the list but has no one tried Drippin’ Honey Asian Pear? Korean Giant is a great pear. Comice is a good pear and may deserve #1. Bartlett is #2 in my opinion because people have not tried others. There are better pears for sure.
@speedster1 Have these polls been updated? Any thoughts about doing them again? I imagine site traffic is up in the last five years.
I voted. But not for things like pear since I havent tried the great cultivars…
I havent tried many of these named cultivars in your list.
As far as I can think now, hmm… I like all the fruits, but what I love best… my favorote fruits in order are probably:
#1, Astringent Asian Persimmon.(i think hybrid will be better)
Pineapple(especially the rough leaf type)
Satsuma
Ripe sour cherry.
Fig
Grape types with a good sweet/sour balance.
Blackberry(+Dewberry & Raspberry)
Mayhaw
Lychee
Home grown bananas.(so much better than walmart)
White Nectarine maybe.
Hmm I am looking forward to some new things like hybrid persimmon, pawpaw, and new cultivars such as hybrid jubileum cherry, and I think some of my great pear cultivars such as Harvest Queen will really improve my already decent view of pears, same thing with apples and many other things those walmart fruits often are not great.
Some things like Honey Jar Jujube are for sure good, better than most walmart fruits but so far dont get in my top 5 things, but I think I will prefer jujube like Chico with a more sweet/sour balance.
Good list and comments!
No I haven’t messed with them. Maybe I’ll start a few new polls but keep them in individual threads. I think some people may have been overwhelmed by that many polls in one thread.
That’s a good idea
Favorite is always so hard to decide. Do I go with the fruit that has had the single best experience? In some cases, I only want a small amount of those fruits, but enjoy them immensely at that time. Or do you go with the fruit that you would almost always want to eat? It’s also complicated by what I’ve had the most experience with. When I have been travelling and able to eat them in good condition I have really enjoyed rambutams, custard apples, and dragonfruit. I don’t know if I would want to eat them all the time and the quality of these fruit I can get in my daily life is terrible. I also really like concord-type grapes when they are is season, but I’m not sure I would want to eat them all year round. Assuming the fruit is high quality my favorites for fresh eating (a balance of joy and duration of enthusiasm) would probably be: peaches, raspberries, strawberries, sweet cherries and persimmons. I do also love sour cherries in cocktails and baked goods, but less for fresh eating. I tend to prefer softer textures over crisp textures and complex flavors over pure sweetness. For instance, I find the new “cotton candy” grapes way too sweet, but do like gooey persimmon. I like apples, but they are only my choice if nothing else is available.
I think of Honey Jar as a jujube with good sweet-sour balance, especially compared to Li or even more so to Sugarcane.
Oh ok. Well they are pretty tasty. I think i will like them better semi-dry perhaps.
I think the value is trying to identify your favorite variety within a specific fruit, ie best nectarine, peach, etc., so others can figure out what to plant. I’m going to guess that’s one of the most common questions and searches here.
I don’t really care if someone likes apples more than nectarines. To each their own.
