They will destroy everything they can get to. Not the same, but I watched several cows take down a 15 foot asian pear tree.
Deer can definitely damage pepper (and most edible garden) plants at right time just by browsing that it will severely set back your harvest. They’ll pretty much eat anything in garden except for onions other smelly herbs.
It looks like that my pears were bit by some insects on its stems and on the fruitlets. Not sure the same insect did that or two different insects did. Please help me to solve the mystery.
On the fruitlets:
On the fruits stem:
We’re just start to warm enough to have some days in 70s. I would think it’s too early for the PCs to come out and bite the fruitlets. but I could be wrong
Yes, goats will chew through everything—and they love to climb. Also, your friend should bear in mind that eating wilted cherry leaves can kill a goat.
That looked like the work of leave rollers. The timing is right, too.
Tippy, thanks. It’s strange that i have never been my pear trees’ leafs rolled up
Many caterpiller-types have mandibles capable of biting fruit and leaves. Do you find some caterpillers around the damaged areas? If you cut a cross section of the fruit, do you see any tunneling insects?
In my yard, Pears, apples, plums are leaf rollers favorite. They don’t seem to like peaches or nectarines. Those tiny green worms feed on leaves and fruitlets this time of the year. I think I use Spinosad and/or BT to kill them.
These leaf rollers do not tunnel. They feed externally. Tunneling comes with PC, Coddilg moth and OFM types…
No, never had caterpillars on my trees and the didn’t see any worm inside of the fruitlets. I did opened and looked the fruitlets at the damaged area.
Tippy , does codding moth leave holes like what on the pictures? I can recognize the PC bite but not coddling moth or OFM’s entrances holes
Never happened before doesn’t prevent it from happening now
If it’s still happening, I bet you will catch it in the act if you are vigilant. Look around the tree where the petiole meets the fruitlet. If you want, you can spray BT to be conservative. It wouldn’t hurt bees.
Coddling moth usually bore into fruit near calyx. OFM gets into from any area they can but you will see oozing at the entry.
Most of your fruit had damage that look like external damage.
Well, my trees are short and I almost looked at the trees every days. It may sound crazy, I just love to be in my yard and watch my trees grow. I am pretty sure there’s no eaten leafs and worms. Every leaf is healthy and clean. The damage got be made by something with wings.
Almost all adult insects have wings.
Annie,
I can understand, I look at my trees everyday, too. If you have not seen any leaf rollers hiding in some leaves, I don’t know what have eaten your fruitlets. Keep in mind some of them work at night and hide well during day light.
When mine have had damage like yours, it is almost always leaf rollers. I have caught them in action once in a while.
Where abouts is the plum tree? Is it common there? Do you have any photos?
Are there mediterranean fly tolerant peach varieties?
Anyone have advice on how to treat rabbit girdle damage? I have a pear that was 50% girdled, which I am trying to save. Any applications or treatment or just leave it be?
Won’t it be able to survive without bridge grafting?
