Hi Derek,

An incredible set of varieties. What have you learned so far from your crosses? Some questions that come to mind:

Do you usually get a result that is midway between the two parents, or do you sometimes get something that makes no sense at all?

Is red fleshed consistent for a given cross, or just occasional? Does it depend on which parent is male or female?

Do any crosses seem incompatible, or have you been able to successfully pollinate everything you’ve tried?

How long until you can taste fruit? Are you grafting after a year, or micro-grafting really early? Or something else?

The scions I got from you earlier this year arrived in great shape. Some might be a little small for the top working I was planning to do later this spring, but I’ve benchgrafted most of them on some Antonovka already so I’ll have backups.

My favorites are Surprise, Clifford, Red Devil, Winekist and Ruby Sipper.

For the most part if they do not have red flesh they are eliminated so hundreds have been culled over the years. Some have been kept because we liked the flavor. Red flesh is variable regardless of male or female or cross.

Some have probably been incompatible but that was probably more an issue of bloom times being too far apart or both a bit infertile. I graft onto franken-dwarf trees to speed up the fruit set then graft keepers to their own M111 root stock.

Wow, it’s great to see a list of all your red fleshed apples!

I’m glad to see you are working on breeding new ones. Do you have any top favorites of the red fleshed seedlings you have bred?

Winekist & Redfield both prove their worth here each season. I have a single whip of Otterson in a temporary spot. It is very healthy (on Geneva30 to moderate its size) & I cut a bit of it for grafting. Will keep ye posted.

My Redfield on M111 FINALLY had fruit last year, but the bi-ennial thing must have kicked in, as it only had one bloom this year.
Have 4 other red fleshed that bloom this year.

Huh, I have Redfield on Gen30 & 202. Both grow slowly & bloom moderately so far. I hope to graft it unto Bud118 this month. Will watch for heavy bloom when young, just in case.

Mine on MM111…and I have grafted a copy onto G890 or something.

I have observed G202 has given me the poorest ‘take rate’ in my grafting ‘career’.

What a fun apple name!

From what I read, Surprise has a different set of color genes than most or all other red-fleshed apples, so Airlie & Surprise might make a ground breaking combo. That is interesting.

I’ve heard speculation that Airlie may be a descendent of Pink Pearl, and PP is itself a descendent of Surprise. Don’t know whether that’s accurate, though.

Etter sent some of his works-in-progress to friends in Corvallis, OR so it’s speculated that since Airlie Red Flesh just appeared on a farm a few miles away, it’s actually one of his projects. He had many that were never released to the public. Airlie is clearly a different apple, but it is so similar to Pink Pearl that it strikes me as unlikely that Airlie just appeared out of nowhere. If that’s true, then Airlie is likely another daughter of Surprise like Pink Pearl, as that was the main red-fleshed apple he was working with. Or it could be a descendent of PP/Etter’s unnamed project that was growing in the area.
