Roses 2026

Of all the roses we have the Joseph’s Coat seems the most resistant; I can’t believe how naturally resistant it is to fungi, it’s leaves always look great spray or no spray. It’s leaves are very glossy and I wonder if that has something to do with it. I don’t think it is naturally that fragrant. It is not the best as a free-standing rose but looks good as a complementary rose in a full garden, and it is crazy vigorous. We prune it back to 8’’ each winter, and it re-grows into bush form each year.

I used to have Molineux yellow rose but it stayed very small and the color faded. I like the Poet’s Wife color. I am torn between the Poet’s Wife vs Princess Alexandra of Kent (I like them both. Love to hear yours and your wife’s opinion on these two.

At the same time, my friend will order Charles Darwin. She likes its color and description..

I don’t like pale color roses so Desdemona won’t be for me. Olivia is out of stock so I’ll order it next year.

We just planted Princess Alexandria of Kent earlier this spring so I cannot yet directly compare the two. The Poet’s Wife it is my favorite smelling rose of our mature varieties. It leans more towards a fruity aroma (maybe peaches) than, for example, Roald Dahl which is also intensely fragrant but smells very different. Regarding appearance, I lean toward pinks (favorite is the Olivia), but I think the flower form of the Poet’s Wife is lovely, and is also quite large.

Double Delight, a very fragrant Hybrid Tea rose.
Bi-color, white and red. More white when weather is cool and cloudy. More red when it is hot and sunny.

It is supposed to be hardy to zone 7a or 6b. I am in 6a but planted it closer to the foundation and have mulched it thickly for the winter. It has come back every year for 10+ years now.

Next to it is Julia Child, a prolific yellow rose. It has pretty blooms, no fragrance, unfortunately. This rose blooms all the time from spring to fall. When blooms first open, they are deep yellow and the color fade to almost white as they age. When a whole bush is covered with blooms in different stages, it is a lovely sight to see.
