Are you growing Green Michurinska outdoors in Zone 6? What kind of protection if any?
I’ve got one plant in ground and one potted. I don’t protect the in ground one at all, and it tends to die back to near the snow line each winter but still ripens figs every year.
Nice! I will have to add that to my collection! Do you have any other varieties that are early & cold hardy enough to die back and bear fruit without protection?
Here are some that are particularly known for fruiting well after winter dieback
Bari, Ciccio Nero, Lyndhurst white, Makedonia dark
some extra early ripening varieties are Florea, Ronde de bordeaux, Verdolino, Hative d’argentuil,
First fruits appearing on cutting from “Jin ao Fen” fig. Entered the soil on august 2022. Grows amazing, im encouraging it to grow single stem instead of bush. I want it to bush up on about 1.5 to two meters so i can walk under it in the future.
What’s your favorite from these?
Probably Hasan because it’s the earliest and most prolific.
Todays fig hall. Three Olympian, one Dr. Gowaty, one Celigia Dolce, and one unkown that was sold to me as a chicago hardy (the sliced fig). Its was definitely ripe. Just sugar taste in general. Any idea what it could be? Its on its second leaf, is a very small shrub, and only set one fig this year.
Btw it was a rooted plug from Fruitwood Nursery.
Too little too late, RdB with its first attempt to set any figs since it was first rooted a few years ago. Maybe next year, pal.
Have you checked back with Fruitwood?
No i thought about dropping them a line. Everything else i have gotten from them was 100% accurate and of great quality.
I’ve been picking the odd Reservoir and Chicago Hardy the last couple weeks. Looks like CH is starting to really get going now (after it’s cooled off, of course!).
I picked my first I-258 of the season today. Probably should have waited another day or two, but my impatience got the better of me. Still had the excellent intense berry flavor!
