Show Off Your Figs and "This year Harvest"

I’ve been curious about Impellizzeri for a while now. Can you say what the taste is like? Does it have issues with splitting or spoiling in the rain? I don’t mind if they get diluted or split a bit, but some larger figs can split badly or spoil easily in rain/humidity.

It’s pretty much a straight figgy flavor. Sometimes a little bit of cherry or something like that, but more like a classic mission style fig. They don’t split in the rain but the eye is fairly large.

Battle of the berries

An undersized VdB, a RdB, and a CLBC picked a day earlier than ideal.

All were very similar. And very tasty. It’s not been hot or sunny enough for perfect figs the last few days, but they were pretty darn good.

What varieties do you have planted that survived?

Nice figs. That RDB and CLBC look so similar.

Some good ones from the weekend.

How does CLBC compare with the others? I used to have it. It never fruited and I gave up on it.

Mine is very small still, just a first year plant. Despite that, I let it fruit even though I shouldn’t have. It was pretty much indistinguishable from those Bordeaux type figs I had it with flavor wise. Way more split resistance than RdB, hard to say if it’s better than VdB though. I’ll have a much better idea in the coming years. All were quite good but not the best of the best.

Honestly, so far this year the best figs I’ve had were a Marseilles Black that achieved perfect ripeness and the figs I’ve gotten from LSU Strawberry. Next year both of those should have more competition though so we’ll see if they hold their titles.

I feel like I’ve read several accounts from folks on the West Coast struggling with CLBC.

I replaced the CLBC with a Genovese Nero AF. It’s a prime location with excellent sun. The GNAF produces much better!

All that double hurricane pass over rain wrecked my CH Figs for a while… they are starting to kick back in now.

You guys are making me jelous! I lost a lot of figs in the almost two weeks of nonstop rain we had here. Just starting to ripen my last handful of the season.

Black celeste. Fruit is small but the flavor, color and sweetness was A+ considering how cold its been. Actually tasted like an A grade fig that ripened in august heat.

Green Goblin. New California seedling discovery. Similar to white madeira. Put out 40 fruits on a 2 month old rooted cutting. Dropped most of those because it was growing too fast and i didnt water enough. It then put out 58 more fruits shortly after. Good sized fig. Very tasty and very thick pulp like jam.

Black as night! Never seen a fig this dark.

I-258. Still not super productive for me, but it’s super tasty when properly ripened (or even when picked a bit too early!).

Tastes like cherry jam.

The trees are slowing down now that we’re mostly getting days and nights in the 70s and 50s, but the low humidity that comes with the fall around here is great for the figs.

While this one is smaller than most, and some abrasion messed up the pretty green skin, this is probably the best colored LSU Strawberry I’ve had so far. Very tasty fig, hopefully next year my real deal Adriatic and my Smith will produce so I can compare the flavor.
