That’s not what I meant to imply. I get catty with the current state of computers and their desire to have the control in our relationship with them. They always say “upgrade” and “modern”, but I do not really agree with their assertion and generally consider Chromium and other modern browsers to themselves be spyware. Not really a discussion for this forum. A quick review of some parameters after I left my computer run some overdue diagnostics while I was away (it found no issues) suggests that the problem is that the updates now applied require browsers that generally do not play well with Windows 7. I believe Win 7 is still the most popular OS worldwide, but most of us here in the good ole US of A have been badgered into replacing our computers and/or accessing the internet on other types of devices. You’ll be able to tell if you suddenly have a lot fewer active people, and you’ll probably see that it impacts our non-US crowd a bit more heavily. If my hunch is correct. It’s not my field of expertise, just one of my many disappointments in what is considered progress.
Ultimately, I cannot install the recommended versions of browser on my preferred computer. I do have a Chromebook, and the platform seems to be working cleanly on it. I only use it for FB’s messenger at present, for at least overlapping reasons, but I am still obstinately refusing to do everything else on it. I can log in here on that, too, and will eventually start using my Win 11 more and let this retire to my offline but stable writing computer. It will likely outlast the next 75 devices I have to use for the internet and it is honestly rather amazing that so very little of what I do online has been impacted so far.
Now, to catch up on what I’ve missed the last couple of days before I get offline and into a book.

I’m with @NuttingBumpus on this bit. Despite it giving me some headaches related to my own obstinacy, this is a big undertaking. If it brings us back to the point where we need to chip in again, please bump that query/thread back up to the forefront.

I also see that the Win 7 thing is emerging as at least a potential theme with most non-computer systems working well.
And, I like the KISS option of just the hearts. FB has trained me to differentiate a bit, but 99% of what I use there is still the thumbs up and the hug. We have more options available in our replies if we need them, and we benefit from having a little incentive to not “stir the pot” when it’s harder to do so.

Maybe give one of those a try for those of you having Win7 issues. Beyond this site there will be more and more things not working with your old browser so its worth the effort to find something that works!

For those following along for this particular piece, Supermium does appear to work for us Win 7 folks on this site. It looks pretty clean compared to most browsers, but I haven’t tried to muddle it yet.
There was more intel available for Thorium, but I’m an overthinker and so was was the primary source for it’s development & publicity. I’m not so techy, so I got myself in a loop and didn’t try it yet. Basic premise is the same, so odds are good, and the page linked above also links to other “forks” in the open source Chromium family, so there may be other options for those of you more in tune with computerese. They are all Chromium, but the implication appears to be that this set of forks branch off before most of what leaves a bad taste in my mouth came along. Something we can all identify with in the fruit growing world. The best stuff doesn’t always end up on the shelves.

One piece of good news here is there is renewed interest in keeping old things going, random people are stepping forward to fill the gap and these browsers are just one example. My son recently got himself and old Wii console and put a new OS on it that someone hacked up which gives it modern features. So maybe that Win 7 computer will last awhile longer..

This is fine for quoted text. For quoted AI slop, I wanted to propose that the text be tinted green, but the new upgrade doesn’t seem to allow that. (It is a recovered memory of mine that the old upgrade did.) There is no preview, by the way, with the new editor.

The only current way to mark something is to use highlighting: this is AI slop. To do this you type
<mark>this is AI slop</mark>.
The new editor can be switched back to the old mode with that upper left hand M-downarrow (“markdown”) button.

i noticed that with Android/chrome it doesn’t give me a resize option on images anymore (used to be able to click at the bottom and see two buttons, upload and resize) now only upload. hope my images don’t end up huge.
They should automatically resize now, so there should be no concern. I think 4MB max is what they will be resized to.
For many years they had some really flakey image processing (I fixed several bugs in it myself) but they switched the programmer in charge of it and I think they may have finally gotten things right.

I have two things I dislike about the change
One, is when you push the button to go to type on the next line it jumps down two lines instead.
The other is when I turn off the screen when I’m in the middle of reading a thread and turn it on to go back to reading it jumps 4-6 posts forward and I have to search where I left off every time.
Do you mean when reading posts and using the downarrow key? I usually use my trackpad to scroll down so I don’t notice anything different.
Has anyone else noticed this? If other people are noticing it I can report it.

Ah yes I also noticed that.. I think in the new WYSIWYG mode they want newline to be a paragraph break so they are putting in that extra line. If you don’t like it you can turn off the WYSIWYG mode with that M button in the upper left. In the markdown mode you only get one newline.
Oh now that the new site has been up for awhile it’s running really fast, much better than before. They must have done some work on the performance.

I have noticed this and was planning to wait to mention it in case it resolved in time.
It happens when I am using Brave browser on an Android mobile OS (I did just try to recreate the exact circumstances but they aren’t possible at this time) but it might happen with other browsers as well. My belief (explained below) is that there haven’t been sufficient posts since last night in the threads that I’m tracking.
Yesterday it happened to me several times when I went to read the more recent posts of a longer thread that I had previously finished. Say that there were 54 posts, I read them all, then later in the day there were an additional 26 posts. I loaded the thread, read 13 of them, put my phone to sleep, picked it back up and woke it, my position on the page would have moved from where I had left it. I am pretty sure that in each case it took me back to the first post of the thread. After this happening several times in different threads yesterday I realized that there is a small blue button towards the bottom right corner that showed up that reads “Back” and which would return me to where I was formerly in the thread.
On the occasions when I found myself up-thread it might have just been taking me back to where I had left off on the thread during my previous visit hours earlier, which just might have been the first post in the thread. That part I’m not certain on since I had opened a bunch of threads in separate tabs that I had wanted to read but didn’t have time at that very moment, so the backend might have been thinking that I had already read post #1.
Yesterday evening I was thinking about the specific circumstances. I considered that the hosting platform might not be logging where I had just read to in that thread and so it was reloading me where the registry had me previously. I tried leaving my phone awake until the screen timed out automatically at five minutes but it didn’t change the fact that I found myself pushed up on the thread when I next woke my phone.

It just happened to me again and I was able to get better information and a screenshot.
A thread new to me, 17 posts. I read to and through the 11th post and gave it a heart. I switched from Brave to Duck Duck Go to see something there, then switched back to GrowingFruit on Brave. It is taking me back to the first post of the thread every time. Each time I switch browser apps and then back to where I am reading the forum it resets me at the start of the thread. It is not limited to just switching between browsers though, as going to the messaging app Signal and then back to the browser caused it as well.

Further update: paying close attention to what post I am shown each time I toggle back to Brave indicates that I was sent from post #59 back to #40, then on the next cycle it was #20, and then the next it took me back to the first post of the thread. I ran through it several times and the number progression stays exactly the same.
