SMC’s 2021 Orcharding Season: Mostly Pictures

Even your last year’s fruit is much lighter that what I got. We probably have two different sports of it.

The skin texture is different also, DFIC 069 Barnisotte has a smooth waxy skin without any peach fuzz at all.

That’s Harrow sweet pear

I’m impressed you have any muscadines surviving this far north. Do you give them any winter protection? Muscadines are one of the zone-pushing crops I’ve been considering.

I don’t think they’re worth it. I’ve only got a handful of berries off of five vines over several years. There’s just too much die back each winter.

That’s too bad. They’re one of those things I learned about when I lived in the South that you just can’t get up here.

A few Indian Free peaches are starting to ripen. Most need another week, but some at the top of the tree were good to go.

I’ve been trying to figure out when Teton de Venus will ripen for me. This one had a small amount of give around the stem, so I figured I’d try it to see how far along it was. I’d say it’s definitely at least two weeks away, but the sugars are starting to concentrate and the flavor seems like it could be really good. I’m excited for this one.

Yesterday was a good mail day thanks to a generous forum member. Taste testing this weekend.

Definitely isn’t Barnisotte! But it looks quite good. Any thoughts as to what it is?

Not sure then. I got it from Leon as Barnisotte. I’ll have to follow up with him as to what it could be.

I’ve got a couple types of Golden Russets growing. And I think this is the real one rather than Bullock. They were great – honeyed and dense. I’ll let the rest mellow in the fridge for a while though.

Had my first D’Arcy Spice this weekend. I definitely picked it too soon and should have stored it in the fridge for a bit, but I was just curious to see what it was like. It wasn’t very good.

WineCrisp has impressed me as an all round solid apple. It’s very disease and scab resistant, has a well behaved growth habit, and sets a nice crop of apples that taste good out of hand and are good for baking too. The flavor is pretty generic apple-y, but not in an unpleasant way. I’d recommend this to anyone trying to grow apples without a lot of chemicals or sprays.

A new hybrid seedling of mine fruited for the first time this year. The seed parent was Nikita’s Gift, the pollen parent was a male cross of Honan Red x Rosseyanka. This one ripened a bit earlier than the rest (still on the tree) because of a small peck on one side. Still, it had no astringency and was rich and sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest ripen up.

A few of the weekend’s standout figs.

Have you fruited Bullock? Want to see what it looks like.

My graft has not produced yet.

Very impressive.
I have a bunch of golden russet (from a different orchard) that is now ripening. One of my favorite apples.

Not yet. I think I have that one on a semi-standard rootstock in a not so great location. It hasn’t grown a whole lot.

A graft I got from you has not produced any flower yet.

Sounds like it’s been shy for both of us. Hopefully next year…

Tasting some pawpaws. These were all excellent. The only one that I didn’t care for so much was NC-1, which had a strong burnt sugar taste. All the others were very smooth and nicely flavored, although Carmelo had a bit of grittiness to the flesh. All in all, though, this was a whole lot of yum.

Indian Free are delicious, one of my favorites! How does Teton de Venus taste?

They’re still not fully ripe for me yet. I’m hoping they will be this weekend.

This is my first year tasting Sanguine Tardive peaches from a young tree. They weren’t very different than my Indian Free peaches, except that ST ripens two weeks later in my orchard. And just like Indian Free, ST has a firm flesh that makes them great for baking. Peach crisp with these guys is an absolute stunner.

These Teton de Venus peaches are still probably another week away, but we’ve got lots of rain in the forecast so I wanted to make sure to taste a few before the flavor gets washed out. They were really good. They’ve got a lot of “honey peach” flavor going on, but with a firmer flesh.

Api Etoile. Hard and starchy. I left some on the tree and took some to put in the fridge.

Picking figs before the rain.

A mix of squash.

A big ol’ wasp nest at the back of the orchard.

Finally got some ripe Teton de Venus. This might be the latest season peach I can grow. I’ve got a few Last Chance on the tree (they’re mostly cracked) and some Halloween (still looking good), but I’m not sure I’ve got enough heat or frost free days to see those to the finish line.

Persimmons are starting to come on strong. I’m at least a week away from the bulk of the harvest, but I’m getting a few early ones from each tree. Proks are super big this year.

Still getting a few late season apples. Campfield wasn’t such a spitter for a cider apple.

Last of the pawpaws. Neal was easily the best of this bunch. I’d call it strongly flavored, but really smooth and rich as well.

Figs are still coming in. Although not all are ripening so well with the cold night we’re having – it seems to make ones with a larger eye (like Calderona de Miner) explode.
