The 39th Parallel Nursery and Orchard!

Got an order from Mike @39thparallel today! Some scions and 2 berries I couldn’t get anywhere else. Everything very nicely packaged and beautifully labeled! Thank you!

Would you happen to know if Red Cinnamon has any scab resistance? I will be grafting with it this spring & that would be useful to know so I can decide which tree to graft it to.

Searching online, I found the most references to it under the name “Punakaneli”.

Is this the one you found? The only info I could find was this and 39th. I’m grafting it also. Thinking about doing two trees of it.

I have not seen much scab on it. I hear it’s often grown organically / no spray in Europe. It takes on some PC damage because it’s relatively thin skinned.

I agree. I bought some trees from him last year. Great looking trees and packaged great as well. A+++ operation.

Google mostly showed me sites of Finnish nurseries (that I used google translate to read the descriptions). Your link has more info than I found on those.

@39thparallel has had it for many years. Have been eating these apples at his farm nearly every year for many years. There are a bunch of these types of apples he is about the only one left growing them. Many of the older nursery men have passed away. What is really concerning are the huge numbers of persimmons etc. That are dissapearing every day! As an example Jerry Lehman and Nick Botner were fruit collectors and now they both have passed away. One was an expert in apples and the other was a persimmon and pawpaw expert. Roger Myers was a jujube expert and really drove the acceptance of the fruits. All of these men and many others were pillars of the fruit growing community. Claypools loss was so signifigant to persimmons that if lehman would not have stepped up we would have lost half of our best varities. Thankfully Cliff England at nuttrees , mike at 39thparallel and others are preserving as much as they can.

Think I got the last 2 scionwood of Red Cinnamon apple from ya this week.
What apple varieties would do well to pollinate it to get more fruit?
I may have some small grafted trees with Hudson’s Golden Gem, Goldrush, Roxbury Russet, Ashmead’s Kernel, Razor Russet, and Calville Blanc d’Hiver that I could add Red Cinnamon onto a branch if any of those would work out.

Also is “Honey Asian” the same as “Drippin’ Honey”. I was pretty sure, just thought I’d ask.

I have not really paid attention to the bloom time. If there are a few other varieties nearby, it shouldn’t be an issue. Yes Honey Asian is Dripping Honey.

There are a few collectors out there in various interest groups stewarding impressive collections. Many don’t seem to be available to the public so having organizations like 39th parallel to keep rare varieties available is certainly a blessing.

Not the best posting job by me but I put a link on my website to Lee Calhoun, Nick Botner and Tom Brown.

I especially love listening to them talk about their passion. Thought you might enjoy it.

Well done, Regina. Thank you. I like the soundtrack to the Calhoun segment: harmonica & dobro.

My piece of God’s green world can hold only so many apples, but am excited to try growing Clark’s Crabapple with a scion which came from 39th Parallel Nursery.

Thanks! I think I’ve watched that video 20 times and I really like the music too. I also enjoy hearing Tom Brown speak. Some would say I have a southern accent, but nothing to compare to him. I love hearing him talk about his passion.

@NuttingBumpus

Its an incredibly productive crabapple! I spent about 15 years of my life experimenting with apples that would survive in Kansas. We look for certain traits when we breed our own apples commercial growers may not care about. I wanted an apple that is exactly what that one is. It produces heavy, stores a very long time, tastes good, ripens late. That apple was one of the very best things that came out of those years. I try to grow pears and aronia commercially or even blackberries but never apples in my climate. The fact it did that well here speaks volumes about just how good that apple really is! Breeding Apples was a pet project for me.

I have it on good authority that Clark has a LOT of pet projects.

I have some questions on Clark Crabapple. Is it self fruitful? A good pollinator? When do blooms start and how long. When is the best time to pick them Month’ish wish like early, mid of late month

I plan to get 3 scions next year. One to grow on different root stock. The other to do some breeding and messing around with cider/brandy apples. Try blends with Golden Harvey, Wickson, Yates and Jadernicka. Plus some super sweets in the herd. Golden Sweet and Husk Sweet. I’ve talked with some local moonshine makers and they are very interested in trying brandy.

Scion 3 is going to the UGA State Botanical Garden. I already sent the curators a picture and wowed them.

It blooms around group 3 in the middle of apple bloom. I would assume it needs another diploid for pollination. It ripens Oct / Nov and flavor improves the longer in hangs until it degrades from freeze thaw cycles. It makes great cider.

For those of you that have not purchased Scion wood from Mike at 39th Parallel, I think it’s worth mentioning that he sends the most generous length scions of the 10 or so suppliers I have purchased from. Typically I can get five 2 bud grafts out of each one. They are also thick enough to use as a bridge graft. I have intense rodent pressure where I live, so the last couple years I have bought Liberty apple scions from him just in case. They are thick enough to take a nail and not split, if you are careful. I’ve ended up using them both of the last 2 years to save a Honeycrisp and a Fuji. I’m getting better at keeping the voles and mice out, I’ve learned to use metal mesh to encase the trunk well above and below the soil line.
