The lotus persimmon are taking over. I was told they would never grow here in my zone. They not only grow they love it here.
Interesting that not everyone considers american persimmon the best rootstock. I’m not saying i agree but i grow both types. Are lotus 60 or 90 chromosome types? Neither? The lotus are used in most cases to graft kaki and kaki hybrids. The rootstock is $5 here Lotus Persimmon Rootstock

Anyone else growing lotus persimmon? I’m not referring to American Persimmon or the Japanese Persimmon but this species is said to have almost purple fruit which is very small. The foliage looks like a pawpaw but they are unlike the pawpaw in that they are very drought tolerant. I do occasionally get some winter die back though most people will say they are hardy to zone 5 or 6. I’m probably zone stretching a bit by growing them here. My Lotus persimmon are in heavy bloom for the first time. Hopefully they will ripen in time here to try them out. Fruit size is supposed to be very small but that’s ok.

My one is a rootstock that comes up every year to about 4’ and dies to the ground in winter.
